Excelsior Maassluis won a five-goal thriller 3-2 away at VV Sint Bavo in the Netherlands Derde Divisie on Saturday, 3 October 2026. In a match that swung one way and then the other, the visitors' attacking quality ultimately proved decisive in a breathless contest.

A Night of End-to-End Football

Matches in the Derde Divisie can sometimes be cagey affairs, but this one was anything but. VV Sint Bavo, playing at home, came out with real intent, pressing high and looking to get the ball forward quickly. Excelsior Maassluis, one of the most respected amateur clubs in the Netherlands, responded by attacking with width and pace, and the result was a genuinely entertaining evening of football.

Five goals, a string of saves at both ends and a tense finale made this a game that fully justified the price of admission.

How the Match Unfolded

The tone was set early. Both teams committed players forward whenever they won possession, and the midfield area became a launching pad rather than a battleground. Sint Bavo struck first, turning a spell of pressure into a goal and sending their supporters into full voice.

The lead did not last. Excelsior Maassluis grew into the game, equalised after a slick passing move through the middle, and then went ahead before half-time with a finish from the edge of the area. Sint Bavo responded after the break to level the score at 2-2, setting up a frantic final half hour in which the visitors found one more moment of quality.

Key Moments

• The opener: VV Sint Bavo's early pressure paid off when a low cross was turned in at the near post.
• Instant response: Excelsior Maassluis equalised within minutes, finishing off a smart move through the channels.
• Turning the game: A well-struck effort from outside the box put the visitors 2-1 up going into the interval.
• Back on terms: Sint Bavo levelled after the restart with a header from a set piece.
• The winner: Excelsior Maassluis capitalised on a defensive mistake and finished ruthlessly to claim all three points.

Tactical Story

Excelsior Maassluis, a club long admired for its youth development pipeline, played with a clear identity: quick ball circulation, overlapping full-backs and forwards who drift into pockets between the lines. That fluidity caused Sint Bavo problems all night, particularly in transition.

Sint Bavo's approach was more vertical. They were at their most dangerous when winning the ball high up the pitch and attacking immediately, and both of their goals came from exactly that kind of scenario. The difference, in the end, was defensive concentration: the hosts switched off twice and were punished both times.

Standout Performers

Excelsior Maassluis' attacking players were the headline acts. The forward who scored and assisted combined movement with end product, and the midfielder dictating play in the centre of the park showed why he is so highly rated in amateur football circles.

For VV Sint Bavo, the two-goal threat came from their front line, and the captain drove the team forward tirelessly. Their display deserved more than a defeat, but football is often decided by small margins.

Season Impact

Three points on the road in a division as competitive as the Derde Divisie are always valuable, and this win strengthens Excelsior Maassluis' position as a side capable of pushing at the top end of the table. The manner of the victory — three goals away from home, a goal in each phase of the match — will please the coaching staff.

For VV Sint Bavo, the challenge is clear: they are creating enough chances to win games, but they must tighten up defensively if they are to climb the standings. On this evidence, both clubs will provide plenty of entertainment between now and the end of the campaign.
