CD El Grullo edged Real Animas Sayula CF 4-3 in a seven-goal Mexico Liga Premier Serie A thriller on 29 October 2026, with a dramatic stoppage-time goal settling a breathless contest that swung one way and then the other.

Match overview

Real Animas Sayula CF hosted the match with the intention of controlling possession, and for spells they did exactly that. The home side moved the ball neatly through midfield and used their wide players to stretch the El Grullo defence. But El Grullo were compact, aggressive in the tackle and ruthless on the counter-attack, and they opened the scoring early when their striker finished a quick break with a low shot across the goalkeeper.

The visitors doubled their advantage midway through the first half after a mistake in the home defence was punished immediately. Real Animas, however, refused to fold. A well-worked goal before half-time gave the hosts a foothold, and they carried that momentum into the second period, equalising shortly after the restart to set up a frantic finish.

From there, the game became a test of nerve. El Grullo retook the lead, Real Animas levelled again, and both sides had chances to win it before the visitors found the decisive goal in stoppage time. The final whistle brought relief for El Grullo and frustration for Real Animas, who had fought their way back into the match more than once.

Key moments

• 11' — 0-1: El Grullo's striker latched onto a through ball and finished calmly to silence the home crowd.
• 24' — 0-2: A loose pass in the Real Animas back line was intercepted, and El Grullo doubled the lead with a composed finish.
• 39' — 1-2: Real Animas pulled one back after a patient build-up ended with a low cross converted at the near post.
• 52' — 2-2: The home captain drove forward from midfield and unleashed a shot that deflected in off the post.
• 67' — 2-3: El Grullo regained the lead with a fast counter, their winger cutting inside before curling into the far corner.
• 81' — 3-3: Real Animas equalised again from a set piece, with their centre-back rising highest to head home.
• 90+3' — 3-4: El Grullo won it late when their striker squeezed a shot past the goalkeeper after a scramble in the box.

Tactical story

Real Animas Sayula CF dictated much of the tempo and created chances through sustained possession, but their defensive transitions were costly. Every time they lost the ball in midfield, El Grullo looked to attack immediately, and the visitors' front line repeatedly found space between the home full-backs and centre-backs.

El Grullo's game plan was clear: absorb pressure, stay compact in the central areas and spring forward with pace. Their midfield worked hard to close down passing lanes, and their wingers were quick to support the striker on the break. That approach produced four goals, but it also meant El Grullo had to survive several anxious moments at the back.

The match was a reminder of how fine the margins can be in the Mexico Liga Premier Serie A. Real Animas showed character to come back twice, but their inability to manage the final minutes proved decisive. El Grullo, by contrast, kept attacking even after conceding the late equaliser and were rewarded for their persistence.

Standout performers

El Grullo's striker was the headline figure, scoring twice, including the stoppage-time winner, and constantly stretching the home defence with intelligent movement. The visiting winger also caused problems throughout, providing width and delivering the kind of direct running that turned defence into attack in seconds.

For Real Animas Sayula CF, the captain was the driving force behind the comeback, combining energy with composure in midfield. The centre-back who scored the third goal was strong in the air and brave in possession, while the home goalkeeper made several important saves to keep the contest alive. In the end, though, the defensive lapses that led to El Grullo's first two goals proved too difficult to fully overcome.

Table and season impact

The three points are a significant boost for CD El Grullo in the Liga Premier Serie A standings, strengthening their position and adding momentum to their campaign. For Real Animas Sayula CF, the defeat is a painful one, especially after scoring three times at home, but the performance offered evidence of their attacking potential.

In a division where away wins and head-to-head results can shape the promotion race, El Grullo's ability to score four times on the road should not be underestimated. Real Animas will need to tighten up defensively while preserving the fighting spirit that brought them back into the match. The 4-3 scoreline will be remembered as one of the seas
