Venados FC Yucatán and Leones Negros de la U. de G. played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw in Mexico Ascenso MX on October 11, 2026. At Estadio Carlos Iturralde, Venados took the lead, but Leones Negros found a late equalizer to claim a point on the road.

The result reflects the competitive nature of Ascenso MX, where margins are often narrow and away points are highly valued. Both teams remain in the promotion conversation, but each will feel they could have taken more from the match.

Match Overview

Venados began with intent, using the width of the pitch to stretch Leones Negros. Their midfield pressed aggressively and forced several turnovers in the attacking half. The breakthrough came after a period of sustained pressure, with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box beating the goalkeeper.

Leones Negros improved after halftime. They pushed their full-backs higher, won more duels in midfield, and began to create chances from crosses. The equalizer arrived late in the second half, rewarding their persistence and silencing the home crowd.

Key Moments

• 31st minute: Venados took the lead with a low drive from just outside the penalty area after a short corner routine.
• 44th minute: Leones Negros nearly equalized before the break, but a header from a free-kick hit the post.
• 63rd minute: Venados’ goalkeeper made a strong save to deny a one-on-one chance.
• 82nd minute: Leones Negros equalized when a cross from the right was converted at the back post.
• 90+3 minutes: Venados pushed for a winner, but a last-ditch block kept the score level.

Tactical Story

Venados’ first-half plan was built on quick ball recovery and wide combinations. They overloaded the flanks and looked to cut the ball back into the penalty area. That approach worked well until Leones Negros adjusted their midfield shape to close the central passing lanes.

Leones Negros became more direct after the interval, targeting the space behind Venados’ advancing full-backs. Their equalizer came from exactly that pattern: a wide overload followed by a cross into the box. Venados tried to regain control with substitutions, but the visitors’ momentum carried them to the final whistle.

Ascenso MX Promotion Race Impact

Both clubs remain in the mix for the Ascenso MX playoff places, but the draw does little to create separation. Venados will be disappointed to concede late at home, while Leones Negros will view the away point as a positive result in a difficult venue.

The head-to-head record stays tight, and the return fixture later in the season could carry significant weight. For now, both sides must turn their attention to the next round and the ongoing battle for promotion.
