Mineros de Zacatecas 0-2 Leones Negros: Clinical visitors punish Mineros at home

Leones Negros de la U. de G. secured a composed 2-0 away victory over Mineros de Zacatecas in the Mexico Ascenso MX on 25 October 2026. The result was built on disciplined defending, intelligent midfield work and two well-timed goals, leaving Mineros frustrated after a home performance that lacked the cutting edge needed to break down a organised opponent.

Mineros had spells of possession and pushed bodies forward, especially after falling behind, but Leones Negros defended their penalty area with authority and looked dangerous whenever they won the ball back. The visitors’ ability to turn defence into attack proved the difference in a match that remained competitive until the closing stages.

Match overview

The first half was a tight contest for long stretches, with Mineros looking to build through midfield and Leones Negros content to absorb pressure before breaking forward. The deadlock was broken on 31 minutes when Omar Mendoza arrived late in the box and guided a low finish beyond the Mineros goalkeeper after a patient passing sequence.

Mineros responded with more direct play and forced a series of crosses into the penalty area, but the visitors’ centre-back pairing dealt with the danger well. Leones Negros doubled their advantage on 76 minutes through Diego Hernández, who capitalised on a loose ball in midfield and drove forward before finishing with precision from the edge of the area.

That second goal took the wind out of Mineros’ sails. The home side continued to press in the final minutes, but Leones Negros managed the game intelligently, slowing the tempo and limiting space in the defensive third to secure a valuable clean sheet.

Key moments

• 31’ – 0-1: Omar Mendoza scores for Leones Negros after a measured attacking move.
• 45’: Mineros’ best chance of the first half is cleared off the line after a goalmouth scramble.
• 76’ – 0-2: Diego Hernández doubles the lead with a powerful finish from outside the box.
• 88’: Leones Negros goalkeeper denies Mineros a consolation goal with a strong save.

Tactical story

Leones Negros set up with a solid defensive block and invited Mineros to play in front of them. Their midfielders stayed compact, cutting off central passing lanes and forcing the home side into wider areas where crosses could be defended. When possession was won, the visitors moved the ball forward quickly, targeting the space left by Mineros’ advancing full-backs.

Mineros struggled to find rhythm in the final third. Their build-up play was patient at times, but the lack of movement between the lines made it easier for Leones Negros to defend. The home side’s best moments came from set pieces and second balls, but they could not convert sustained pressure into a goal.

Standout players

Omar Mendoza and Diego Hernández were the key figures for Leones Negros, combining energy with end product. Mendoza’s opening goal settled the visitors, while Hernández’s strike gave them breathing room in the final quarter of the match. The Leones Negros goalkeeper also deserved credit for a late save that preserved the clean sheet.

For Mineros de Zacatecas, the midfield worked hard to keep the team moving forward, but the attacking line lacked sharpness in the box. The home side’s best performer was their goalkeeper, who made several saves to keep the scoreline respectable before the second goal.

Season impact

The win strengthens Leones Negros de la U. de G. in the Mexico Ascenso MX standings and gives them momentum heading into their next fixture. For Mineros de Zacatecas, the defeat is a reminder that home advantage must be backed by greater precision in the final third. Mineros will need to improve their attacking movement and set-piece execution if they are to turn possession into points.
