Alebrijes de Oaxaca vs Cruz Azul Hidalgo: Home Side Edge 2-1 Ascenso MX Thriller

Alebrijes de Oaxaca claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul Hidalgo in their Mexico Ascenso MX clash at the Estadio Eduardo Vasconcelos, using a second-half breakthrough to settle a contest that remained balanced for long stretches. The result gave the Oaxaca side three important points in the promotion race and left Cruz Azul Hidalgo with a narrow defeat despite a disciplined away performance.

The match report reads like a classic Ascenso MX battle: plenty of midfield pressure, moments of quality in the final third, and a finish that hinged on the home team’s ability to turn territorial control into goals. Alebrijes de Oaxaca vs Cruz Azul Hidalgo may not have been a high-scoring spectacle, but it delivered the kind of tense, competitive football that makes the Mexican second tier so difficult to predict.

Match Overview

Alebrijes de Oaxaca started with the greater urgency, pushing their full-backs high and looking to isolate Cruz Azul Hidalgo’s defensive line with early crosses into the box. The visitors responded by sitting compact in a mid-to-low block, conceding possession in harmless areas and waiting for transitions through the wide channels.

The opening goal arrived midway through the first half when Alebrijes turned a spell of pressure into a lead. A flowing move down the right ended with a low delivery into the penalty area, and the home side’s forward attack was rewarded with a close-range finish. The Estadio Eduardo Vasconcelos responded loudly, but Cruz Azul Hidalgo refused to fold.

The equalizer came before half-time and changed the mood of the contest. Cruz Azul Hidalgo won the ball in midfield, moved it quickly to the left, and produced a measured finish that beat the Alebrijes goalkeeper. That goal gave the visitors confidence and ensured the teams went into the break level, with the match still very much in the balance.

Key Moments

• First-half opener: Alebrijes de Oaxaca broke the deadlock after sustained pressure down the right, finishing a low cross from inside the area.
• Cruz Azul Hidalgo response: The visitors equalized before the interval with a quick transition and a composed finish, silencing the home crowd for a moment.
• Second-half winner: Alebrijes restored their lead after the break, capitalizing on a defensive scramble and forcing the ball over the line from close range.
• Late resistance: Cruz Azul Hidalgo pushed numbers forward in the final stages, but Alebrijes managed the game well and protected their narrow advantage.

The decisive moment came in the second half when Alebrijes de Oaxaca increased the tempo again. After pinning Cruz Azul Hidalgo back with a series of corners and wide attacks, the home side found the winning goal in a crowded penalty area. It was not the cleanest finish of the night, but it was exactly the kind of scrappy, determined moment that often decides Ascenso MX matches.

Tactical Story

Alebrijes de Oaxaca’s approach was built on width and patience. Their midfield kept the ball moving, drawing Cruz Azul Hidalgo out of shape before switching play to the flanks. The home team’s full-backs were aggressive, and their crosses caused problems throughout the first hour. When the visitors dropped deeper after the equalizer, Alebrijes responded by committing more bodies into the box and winning second balls around the edge of the area.

Cruz Azul Hidalgo, meanwhile, showed why they remain a difficult opponent on the road. Their defensive organization was strong for long periods, and their counter-attacking plan produced the equalizing goal. The visitors’ best moments came when they won possession in midfield and attacked quickly, but they were ultimately undone by Alebrijes’ persistence and inability to clear their lines under pressure.

Standout Performers

Alebrijes’ attacking wide players were central to the victory, repeatedly stretching the Cruz Azul Hidalgo defense and delivering dangerous service into the box. The home side’s midfield also deserves credit for controlling the rhythm after half-time and ensuring the game did not slip away after the equalizer.

For Cruz Azul Hidalgo, the goalkeeper produced several important saves to keep the score level for long stretches, while the center-backs dealt with a heavy volume of crosses. The visitors’ midfield runner was also a threat on the break and took his equalizing chance well. In the end, however, the away side lacked the final clear-cut opportunity needed to rescue a point.

Season Impact

The 2-1 win strengthens Alebrijes de Oaxaca’s position in the Ascenso MX standings and adds momentum to their promotion push. Home victories are especially valuable in a league wh
