Yacoub El Mansour claimed a hard-fought 1-0 away win over KAC de Kenitra in Morocco Botola 2, with a single goal proving enough to separate two sides that cancelled each other out for long stretches. The visitors defended their lead with discipline and organisation, frustrating a home crowd that grew increasingly restless as the second half wore on.

Match overview

Botola 2 fixtures between established clubs and ambitious newcomers are often decided by moments rather than momentum, and this was a textbook example. KAC de Kenitra enjoyed more of the ball, particularly after the interval, but Yacoub El Mansour's compact defensive shape and quick counters gave them the edge that mattered.

How the game unfolded

The opening half hour was cagey. Kenitra looked to build patiently from the back, using their midfield triangle to circulate possession, while Yacoub El Mansour dropped into a disciplined 4-4-2 block and waited for mistakes. Chances were scarce — a couple of half-openings from crosses came to nothing at either end.

The decisive moment came shortly before the break. A loose ball in midfield was pounced on, and a quick forward pass released the striker into the channel. He held off his marker, shifted the ball onto his stronger foot and finished low across the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

Kenitra responded with their best spell of the game either side of half time. They pushed their full-backs higher, delivered a stream of crosses into the box and forced a series of corners. But the final ball consistently lacked quality, and when it did find a target, the Yacoub El Mansour goalkeeper was equal to it. Substitute forwards were introduced to add pace and bodies in the box, yet the visitors' centre-backs stood firm, clearing everything that came their way.

Key moments

• 41' – Yacoub El Mansour score the only goal, finishing low from the channel.
• 55' – Kenitra's best chance is tipped over from a header at the back post.
• 72' – A triple substitution signals the hosts' all-out push for an equaliser.
• 90+3' – A last-ditch block preserves the clean sheet.

Tactical story

Yacoub El Mansour's game plan was simple and executed well: concede possession in harmless areas, keep the lines tight, and attack the space behind Kenitra's advanced full-backs. It is a blueprint that travels well in Botola 2, where a single goal often decides matches and defensive organisation is at a premium.

Kenitra's problem was a familiar one for teams chasing a game — plenty of territory, very little penetration. Their crossing was predictable, and without a striker willing to attack the near post, the visiting defence were rarely stretched. The midfield also struggled to break lines through central passing, meaning almost every attack ended in a hopeful delivery rather than a clear chance.

Standout performers

The Yacoub El Mansour goalscorer deserves credit for the quality of his finish, but the real hero was their goalkeeper, who commanded his area confidently and produced a decisive save early in the second half. Their captain at centre-back marshalled the back line superbly. For Kenitra, the left winger was their most consistent threat, repeatedly beating his man but receiving little support in the box.

Season impact

For Yacoub El Mansour, wins like this are the currency of a promotion challenge: narrow, unglamorous, and worth exactly the same three points as a rout. Kenitra, meanwhile, are left to reflect on a night when dominance of the ball produced nothing tangible — a pattern that can quickly turn a promising campaign into a mid-table one if it is not corrected in front of goal.
