Tactical Story

Swieqi lined up in a 4-3-3 and tried to use width to stretch Hibernians early on. Their midfield pressed aggressively, but as the game wore on, Hibernians adjusted their build-up play and began finding space between the lines. The introduction of fresh legs in central midfield allowed Hibernians to slow the tempo and protect their lead in the final 15 minutes.

Hibernians defended deep when needed but remained dangerous on the counter. Their ability to win second balls in midfield was a decisive factor, especially after taking the lead.

Standout Players

Martina Borg was influential for Hibernians, not only for her equalising goal but also for her work in linking play. Sarah Caruana delivered the decisive moment with a composed finish. Goalkeeper Rebecca Vella made two important saves late on to preserve the win.

For Swieqi, Elena Farrugia was the brightest attacking presence, while Maya Cachia worked tirelessly in midfield. Defender Leah Ayres also produced a strong recovery challenge in the second half to deny a third Hibernians goal.

What the Result Means

The win lifted Hibernians into a stronger position in the Malta Women's Division 1 standings and underlined their credentials as a side capable of grinding out results. Swieqi United Women remain a dangerous opponent, but this was a missed opportunity to take points from a direct rival. The defeat will sting, though the performance offered enough positives to suggest they will respond quickly.
