Hibernians Women 1-2 Mgarr Women: Mgarr Fight Back to Claim Away Win

Mgarr Women came from behind to beat Hibernians Women 2-1 in the Malta Women's Division 1 on September 27, 2026, ending Hibernians' winning run in dramatic fashion. After taking an early lead, Hibernians were undone by a determined second-half comeback from Mgarr, who scored twice to secure a memorable away victory.

The result was a major boost for Mgarr, who showed resilience and tactical discipline. Hibernians, fresh from their win over Swieqi United Women, were left to rue missed chances and a lack of cutting edge after the break.

Match Overview

Hibernians started brightly and took the lead in the 18th minute when Martina Borg converted a penalty after a handball in the box. The home side continued to press and created several opportunities to double their advantage, but Mgarr's goalkeeper Claire Mifsud made a string of saves to keep the deficit at one.

Mgarr equalised in the 41st minute through Rebecca Bajada, who finished neatly after a quick counter-attack. That goal gave the visitors belief, and they grew stronger as the match progressed. The winner arrived in the 73rd minute when Emma Zammit headed home from a well-delivered free-kick.

Key Moments

• 18th minute – Hibernians Women 1-0: Martina Borg sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot.
• 41st minute – 1-1: Rebecca Bajada latched onto a through ball and slotted a low finish into the corner.
• 73rd minute – 1-2: Emma Zammit rose highest at the back post to head in a free-kick.
• 86th minute: Hibernians struck the post from a late corner, but the equaliser would not come.

Tactical Story

Hibernians set up in a 4-2-3-1 and controlled the first half with patient build-up play. However, Mgarr adjusted their shape after the break, dropping into a compact 4-4-2 mid-block and looking to spring forward on the counter. That change limited Hibernians' space in central areas and forced them into hopeful crosses.

Mgarr's willingness to press at the right moments disrupted Hibernians' rhythm. Their two goals came from quick transitions and set-piece delivery, areas they clearly targeted before the match.

Standout Players

Rebecca Bajada was outstanding for Mgarr, scoring the equaliser and constantly stretching the Hibernians defence with her runs. Emma Zammit delivered the decisive goal and was dominant in the air. Goalkeeper Claire Mifsud was equally important, making three crucial saves in the first half.

For Hibernians, Martina Borg was their best player, scoring the penalty and driving forward from midfield. Defender Sarah Caruana made several important interceptions, but the team as a whole could not maintain their first-half intensity.

What the Result Means

The win moves Mgarr Women up the Malta Women's Division 1 table and gives them confidence for the weeks ahead. Hibernians Women miss the chance to build on their victory over Swieqi and will need to respond quickly, especially with the title race already becoming competitive. This was a classic example of a game turning on fine margins and clinical finishing.
