Diekirch 1-3 F91 Dudelange: Dudelange Avoid Upset to Progress in Luxembourg Cup

F91 Dudelange, one of Luxembourg's most decorated clubs, booked their place in the next round of the Luxembourg Cup with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over a spirited Diekirch side on Sunday, 20 September 2026. The National Division giants were given a scare by their lower-league opponents but ultimately had too much quality.

Match Overview

Played at the Stade Municipal, Diekirch started brightly, pressing high and disrupting Dudelange's rhythm. The hosts took a shock lead in the 22nd minute through a well-taken set-piece, sending the home crowd into raptures. However, Dudelange responded like champions, equalising before half-time through a moment of individual brilliance. In the second half, the visitors upped the tempo and scored twice more to secure the win, though Diekirch continued to battle until the final whistle.

Key Moments

• 22nd minute: Diekirch take a surprise lead with a header from a corner, sparking wild celebrations.
• 39th minute: Dudelange equalise with a curling shot from the edge of the box.
• 61st minute: Dudelange take the lead for the first time, finishing off a slick team move.
• 78th minute: A third goal seals the win, with a low drive into the bottom corner.
• 90th minute: Diekirch nearly pull one back, but a superb save denies them a consolation.

Tactical Story

Diekirch set up in a compact 5-4-1, looking to frustrate Dudelange and hit on the counter. Their game plan worked for the first half-hour, as they defended deep and won the midfield battles. Dudelange struggled to find spaces, but their manager made a tactical switch at half-time, pushing the wingers narrower and overloading the centre. This allowed them to create more chances and eventually break down the resilient defence. Dudelange's superior fitness and technical ability told in the end, though Diekirch's organization was commendable.

Standout Players

For Dudelange, Alexandre Costa was the difference-maker, scoring the equaliser and assisting the third. His creativity and direct running were too much for Diekirch. Yannick Ricardo also impressed in midfield with his passing range. Diekirch's goalkeeper Paul Wagner made several fine saves to keep his team in the game, while captain Marc Thill led by example at the back.

Cup Impact and What's Next

F91 Dudelange advance to the next round, keeping their hopes of lifting the Luxembourg Cup alive. For Diekirch, the defeat is disappointing but their performance will give them confidence for the league season. Dudelange will now focus on the next round, where they will expect to face tougher opposition. With their squad depth, they remain one of the favourites for the trophy.
