Dainava punish Ekranas with clinical away display

DFK Dainava Alytus secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Ekranas Panevezys in the Lithuanian I Lyga on 17 October 2026. The visitors produced a ruthless performance, scoring three goals from just five shots on target, to leave Panevezys with a long trip home and plenty to ponder.

Ekranas, once a dominant force in Lithuanian football, struggled to contain Dainava’s quick transitions. The win strengthens Dainava’s position in the upper half of the table, while Ekranas remain mired in mid-table mediocrity.

Match overview

The home side started positively, enjoying the majority of possession in the opening twenty minutes. But it was Dainava who struck first against the run of play, when Marius Žaliūkas intercepted a stray pass and raced clear to finish coolly. Ekranas equalised shortly before half-time through a header from Tomas Mikuckis, giving the home crowd hope.

However, the second half belonged entirely to Dainava. They regained the lead within five minutes of the restart when Deividas Matulevičius curled a beautiful effort into the top corner. Ekranas pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but Dainava sealed the win on the break, Arminas Vaskys finishing off a sweeping move. The scoreline flattered the visitors slightly, but their efficiency in front of goal was the difference.

Key moments

• 22' – Marius Žaliūkas gives Dainava the lead with a composed finish.
• 44' – Tomas Mikuckis heads in an equaliser for Ekranas.
• 50' – Deividas Matulevičius restores Dainava’s lead with a stunning strike.
• 78' – Arminas Vaskys wraps up the win on the counter-attack.
• 90' – Ekranas hit the post in stoppage time.

Tactical story

Ekranas set up in a 4-2-3-1 and looked to build patiently from the back. But their slow tempo allowed Dainava to press effectively and force errors. Dainava, using a 4-4-2 diamond, were happy to sit deep and spring forward at pace. Their midfield diamond overwhelmed Ekranas in the centre of the park, with the two narrow midfielders constantly intercepting passes and launching counter-attacks.

Ekranas’s full-backs pushed high in the second half, leaving them exposed to Dainava’s rapid wingers. The third goal was a prime example: a turnover in midfield, a quick pass out wide, and a low cross finished first-time. Ekranas manager Rimas Giršas will be concerned by his side’s inability to handle direct running.

Standout players

Deividas Matulevičius was the architect of Dainava’s win, scoring one and assisting another with a series of intelligent through balls. Marius Žaliūkas led the line superbly, holding up play and bringing others into the game. For Ekranas, Tomas Mikuckis was the only real threat, his equaliser a rare highlight on a disappointing evening.

Season impact

Dainava Alytus move up to fourth in the Lithuanian I Lyga, keeping their promotion hopes alive. Ekranas Panevezys remain in eighth, and with each passing week, the gap to the top teams grows. The Panevezys faithful will demand a response in their next fixture, while Dainava will be buoyed by a thoroughly professional away performance.
