Macará produced one of the standout results of the LigaPro Serie A round, defeating LDU Quito 2-1 away at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado. The visitors absorbed long spells of pressure, defended their penalty area with discipline, and struck at key moments to leave Quito with all three points. For LDU, it was a frustrating night in front of their own supporters, with possession and territory failing to translate into a positive result.

Match Overview

Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito entered the match as the home favorite and dictated the tempo from the opening whistle. The hosts circulated the ball quickly through midfield, pushed their full-backs high, and looked to create overloads around the Macará penalty area. Macará, by contrast, sat compact in a mid-to-low block and looked to spring forward through quick transitions.

The game’s first clear chance fell to LDU after a sustained spell of possession, but Macará’s goalkeeper stood firm. The visitors grew into the contest and opened the scoring against the run of play, changing the mood inside the stadium and forcing LDU to chase the game.

Key Moments

• 23rd minute – Macará take the lead: A sharp counter-attack ended with Facundo Pons finishing calmly inside the box after a low cross from the right.
• 54th minute – LDU equalize: Alex Arce reacted quickest to a loose ball in the area, turning and firing home to bring the home crowd back into the match.
• 78th minute – Macará strike again: Jhon Cifuentes exploited space between LDU’s center-backs and converted a precise cut-back to restore the visitors’ advantage.
• Late pressure: LDU pushed numbers forward in the final ten minutes, but Macará defended their box with composure and cleared several dangerous deliveries.

Tactical Story

LDU dominated the ball, but their attacking rhythm became predictable as the match wore on. The hosts frequently worked the ball wide before delivering crosses into a crowded penalty area, where Macará’s center-backs were well positioned to defend. LDU’s midfielders found space between the lines in the first half, yet the final pass too often lacked precision.

Macará’s game plan was clear and effective: stay compact, deny central penetration, and attack the space left behind by LDU’s advanced full-backs. Their two goals came from exactly that approach, with quick vertical passes turning defense into attack in a matter of seconds. The visitors also managed the game well after taking the lead for the second time, slowing the tempo and forcing LDU to restart from deeper positions.

Standout Players

Facundo Pons was a constant threat on the counter and capped his performance with the opening goal. Jhon Cifuentes delivered the decisive moment in the second half and worked tirelessly defensively. For LDU, Alex Arce was the most dangerous attacker, scoring the equalizer and forcing Macará’s goalkeeper into another important save late on. Macará’s goalkeeper also deserves credit for a composed display under sustained pressure.

LigaPro Serie A Impact

The result damages LDU Quito’s push at the top end of the LigaPro Serie A standings and hands Macará a significant confidence boost on the road. LDU will need to regroup quickly, particularly with their attacking efficiency and defensive transitions under scrutiny. Macará, meanwhile, can point to this performance as evidence of their ability to compete against the league’s strongest sides. The three points will be especially valuable as the season enters its decisive phase.
