Eibar Women 1-0 Athletic Club Women: Basque derby upset in Liga F

Eibar Women claimed a memorable 1-0 victory over Athletic Club Women in the Spanish Primera División de la Liga de Fútbol Femenino on Monday, securing a famous Basque derby win against their more decorated rivals. The single goal was enough to settle a fiercely contested encounter and delivered a significant boost to the hosts' campaign.

Matches between these two sides always carry extra weight given the regional rivalry, and this one was no exception. Athletic Club Women, historically the stronger of the two and a side with a rich tradition in Spanish women's football, started as favourites. But Eibar had other plans. From the first whistle, the home side pressed aggressively, closed down space in midfield and refused to allow their opponents to settle into a rhythm.

Eibar's early pressure rewarded

The decisive moment arrived when Eibar turned a spell of pressure into a goal. A well-constructed attacking move ended with a clinical finish that beat the Athletic goalkeeper and sent the home crowd into raptures. It was no more than Eibar deserved for their intensity and ambition in the opening exchanges.

After taking the lead, Eibar showed maturity beyond their years. Rather than sitting back and inviting pressure, they continued to press high and disrupt Athletic's build-up play. The visitors did create a few half-chances before the break, but Eibar's goalkeeper was alert and the defence stood firm.

Athletic Club Women push for an equaliser

As expected, Athletic Club Women came out stronger in the second half. They dominated possession, pushed their full-backs higher and began to create more sustained pressure around the Eibar penalty area. Crosses were whipped in, shots were blocked, and corners piled up. Eibar's defenders threw themselves in front of everything, and the goalkeeper produced a string of saves to preserve the clean sheet.

The hosts also carried a threat on the counter-attack, with quick breaks forcing Athletic to keep numbers back. That balance between defending deep and looking to counter was managed well by the Eibar coaching staff, who made timely substitutions to keep the energy levels high.

Key moments and standout performers

• Match-winner: Eibar's goal came from a well-worked move and proved to be the difference.
• Defensive resilience: The Eibar back line and goalkeeper withstood sustained second-half pressure.
• Midfield battle: Eibar's midfield pressed effectively, disrupting Athletic's rhythm.
• Athletic's frustration: Despite plenty of possession, the visitors could not find the equaliser.

What the win means for the Liga F table

This is a result that will resonate beyond the Basque Country. Eibar Women gain three valuable points and a huge confidence boost, while Athletic Club Women lose ground in their pursuit of a high league finish. For Eibar, the challenge now is to build on this performance and show consistency in the weeks ahead.

For Athletic, the focus will be on converting possession into goals and finding solutions against teams that defend deep. The return fixture will be eagerly anticipated, and Eibar will travel with belief that they can repeat the feat. On this evidence, the Basque derby in Liga F remains one of the most compelling fixtures in Spanish women's football.
