JFK Ventspils and Marupe played out a 0-0 draw in the Latvian 1. Liga on Sunday evening, with both goalkeepers producing important saves in a match that promised more than it delivered in front of goal. The point leaves both sides with something to build on, but neither will be fully satisfied after a game of missed opportunities.

Match overview

JFK Ventspils started the brighter of the two teams, moving the ball quickly and pressing Marupe high up the pitch. Marupe weathered the early pressure and gradually grew into the contest, using quick transitions to test the Ventspils defence. The second half opened up considerably, with chances at both ends, but a combination of good goalkeeping and wasteful finishing kept the scoreline blank.

Key moments

• 14th minute: JFK Ventspils created the first chance of the game when a shot from the edge of the box was tipped over by the Marupe goalkeeper.
• 29th minute: Marupe responded with a counter-attack, but the final effort was blocked by a well-positioned defender.
• 58th minute: Ventspils’ best opportunity came from a header at the back post, which went narrowly wide.
• 71st minute: Marupe forced a fine save from the Ventspils goalkeeper after a low drive from outside the area.
• 86th minute: A late free-kick for Ventspils was cleared away as Marupe held on for the draw.

Tactical story

JFK Ventspils looked to control the game through midfield and use their wide players to stretch Marupe’s back four. Marupe, by contrast, were happy to defend in a mid-block and attack the space behind Ventspils’ full-backs. That made for an evenly matched contest, with both teams enjoying spells of pressure but neither able to find a decisive final pass. As the game wore on, the space increased, but composure in the final third proved elusive.

Standout performers

Both goalkeepers were central to the outcome, making important saves at key moments. The Ventspils goalkeeper was particularly alert in the second half, while his Marupe counterpart commanded his area well under late pressure. In midfield, Ventspils’ Ralfs Krollis was a driving force, while Marupe’s Kristaps Liepa worked tirelessly to disrupt possession and launch counter-attacks.

What it means

The draw adds a point to both teams’ tallies in the Latvian 1. Liga and keeps the promotion race tightly packed. JFK Ventspils will feel they did enough to win, especially given their first-half control, while Marupe will take encouragement from a solid away performance and a clean sheet. Both sides now turn their attention to the next round, where converting chances will be the priority.
