Apice Calcio 1964 made home advantage count with a composed 2-0 victory over ASD Pontecagnano Faiano in Italy’s Amateur Eccellenza Puglia, producing a performance built on patience, midfield control and two well-timed goals. On a Sunday evening under the lights, Apice set the tone early and never allowed their visitors to settle into a comfortable rhythm, securing three valuable points and a clean sheet.

Match overview

The home side began with purpose, moving the ball quickly through the thirds and using the width of the pitch to stretch Pontecagnano’s defensive block. Apice’s midfield trio pressed aggressively after losing possession, forcing their opponents into hurried clearances and limiting clear attacking sequences. Pontecagnano Faiano defended in numbers and looked to spring counterattacks, but the final pass too often arrived late or under pressure.

The breakthrough came before half-time. Apice worked the ball down the right, created space near the byline and delivered a low cutback into the penalty area. The home centre-forward arrived on cue, controlling first time and finishing calmly to give Apice a deserved lead. Pontecagnano responded with a brief spell of pressure either side of the interval, but Apice’s back line remained disciplined.

Key moments

• First half: Apice’s persistent wide play produced the opening goal, finished from close range after a sharp low cross.
• After the break: Pontecagnano’s goalkeeper made two important saves to keep the visitors within reach.
• Late in the game: Apice sealed the result with a second goal, this time after a quick transition caught Pontecagnano pushed forward.
• Final whistle: A clean sheet capped a controlled defensive display from the home side.

Tactical story

Apice’s shape was compact without the ball and expansive with it. The full-backs pushed high to create overloads, while the midfield protected the centre of the pitch and recycled possession efficiently. Pontecagnano Faiano tried to absorb pressure and hit on the break, but their isolation of the striker made it difficult to sustain attacks. As the game wore on, Apice’s superior ball circulation and fresher legs told the story.

Standout performers

Apice’s captain led by example in midfield, breaking up play and setting the tempo, while the centre-back pairing dealt confidently with aerial balls into the box. The home goalkeeper was rarely troubled but handled crosses well when called upon. For Pontecagnano, the goalkeeper kept the scoreline respectable with a string of saves, and the central defenders produced several important blocks despite the eventual defeat.

Season impact

The three points strengthen Apice Calcio 1964’s home record and add momentum to their Eccellenza Puglia campaign. A clean sheet will be especially pleasing, as it confirms the defensive solidity behind their attacking intent. Pontecagnano Faiano, meanwhile, will look to regroup quickly and find more penetration in the final third after a disciplined but ultimately toothless evening.
