Vibonese vs Athletic Palermo: Vibonese Power Past Palermo with 3-0 Victory

Vibonese produced a commanding performance to defeat Athletic Palermo 3-0 at the Stadio Luigi Razza on Sunday evening, extending their unbeaten home record in Serie D. A first-half brace and a late third goal sealed a comfortable win for the hosts.

Match Overview

Vibonese, based in Vibo Valentia, went into the match looking to keep pace with the promotion contenders. Athletic Palermo, a newly promoted side, arrived with confidence but were ultimately outclassed by a sharper, more clinical Vibonese team. The three goals came from a combination of slick passing and relentless pressing.

Key Moments

The deadlock was broken in the 14th minute when Francesco Rizzo converted a penalty after a handball in the box. Just nine minutes later, Rizzo doubled his tally, finishing off a flowing team move with a first-time strike.

Athletic Palermo's best chance came early in the second half, but a superb save from Vibonese's goalkeeper kept them at bay. The points were secured in the 79th minute when Giovanni Messina added a third, heading in from a corner.

Tactical Story

Vibonese lined up in a 4-3-3 and pressed high from the start, forcing Palermo into errors. Their midfield trio dominated, winning second balls and feeding the front three. Athletic Palermo tried to play out from the back but were repeatedly caught in possession.

The hosts' full-backs pushed high, creating overloads in wide areas, and the third goal came from a set-piece, highlighting their aerial threat. Palermo's 4-4-2 struggled to contain Vibonese's movement, and their lack of a plan B was evident.

Standout Players

Francesco Rizzo was the match-winner with two goals, his movement and finishing of the highest quality. Giovanni Messina was a constant menace on the wing and capped his performance with a goal. For Palermo, goalkeeper Antonio Greco made several saves to keep the score down.

Table and Season Impact

Vibonese move up to fifth place with this win, now just three points off the top. Athletic Palermo remain in the lower half, and their away form continues to be a concern. Vibonese will be looking to build on this momentum in their next match, while Palermo face a crucial home fixture to stop the rot.
