Varesina Calcio and Pro Sesto played out a 0-0 draw in Italian Serie D on 18 October 2026, with both sides cancelling each other out in a cagey, tactical contest. Clear chances were rare, but the match was not without tension, especially in the final 20 minutes when both teams pushed for a winner.

Match overview

The first half was a story of midfield congestion. Varesina tried to build patiently from the back, while Pro Sesto pressed in short bursts and looked to spring forward on the counter. The best early opening fell to Varesina in the 12th minute, but their striker dragged a shot wide from a promising position. Pro Sesto's first real chance came in the 38th minute, a header from a free-kick that was well saved by Jacopo Ferri.

The second half opened up slightly as both teams tired and spaces appeared. Varesina had a goal disallowed for offside in the 71st minute, and Pro Sesto were denied by a goal-line clearance eight minutes later. In the closing stages, both goalkeepers were called into action, but neither side could find the breakthrough. A share of the points felt like a fair reflection of a match in which defences largely dominated.

Key moments

• 12' – Varesina chance: A low shot from the edge of the box flashes wide of the far post.
• 38' – Pro Sesto header: Jacopo Ferri makes a strong save to keep the score level.
• 71' – Goal disallowed: Varesina find the net, but the assistant referee raises his flag for offside.
• 79' – Goal-line clearance: Pro Sesto are denied by a defender's last-ditch intervention.
• 88' – Late save: Marco De Luca tips a curling effort over the bar.

Tactical story

Varesina set up in a compact 4-4-2 and tried to control the game through possession, but Pro Sesto's 3-5-2 matched them in central areas. The away side's wing-backs pushed high when possible, yet Varesina's wide midfielders tracked back diligently. With both teams reluctant to commit too many bodies forward, the match became a battle of patience. The introduction of fresh attacking substitutes late on added urgency, but the defensive units held firm.

Standout players

Both goalkeepers deserve credit. Ferri was alert in the first half, and De Luca produced the save of the match late on. Varesina's centre-back pairing also impressed with their positioning and aerial strength, while Pro Sesto's midfield anchor broke up play effectively throughout.

Season impact

A point apiece keeps both teams moving in a congested Serie D table. Varesina will be pleased with a clean sheet but may feel they did enough to win. Pro Sesto will take confidence from a solid away defensive display, though their search for more attacking fluency continues.
