Pistoiese take narrow 1-0 win at Varesina Calcio in Serie D

Pistoiese left Varesina Calcio with all three points after a disciplined 1-0 victory in Italian Serie D on Sunday, 20 September 2026. A single second-half goal proved enough in a match that was often tight, tactical and low on clear-cut chances.

Varesina Calcio had spells of possession and pushed numbers forward after the interval, but they could not find a way past a resolute Pistoiese defence. The visitors managed the game well in the closing stages, slowing the tempo and protecting their lead to secure an important away result.

Match overview

The opening exchanges were cautious, with both sides wary of leaving space behind their midfield lines. Varesina looked to build patiently through the middle, while Pistoiese sat compact and looked for quick transitions into the channels. The first half produced few genuine openings, but the pattern of the match became clear: Varesina would have the ball, and Pistoiese would defend with concentration and counter when possible.

After the break, Varesina raised their tempo and began to deliver more crosses into the box. Pistoiese, however, defended their penalty area with discipline. The decisive moment arrived when a fast break down the right created a low ball across goal, and the Pistoiese attacker converted from close range.

Key moments

• 12th minute: Varesina’s first meaningful attack ended with a low shot from the edge of the area that was held comfortably by the Pistoiese goalkeeper.
• 28th minute: Pistoiese nearly struck first when a header from a corner flashed just over the crossbar.
• 54th minute: The breakthrough. Pistoiese broke quickly down the right, and a precise low cross was turned in at the near post to make it 0-1.
• 67th minute: Varesina forced a fine save from a curling free-kick, with the Pistoiese goalkeeper pushing the ball around the post.
• 82nd minute: Varesina appealed for a penalty after a challenge inside the box, but the referee waved play on.
• 90+3 minutes: Pistoiese cleared a final dangerous delivery to secure the clean sheet and the win.

Tactical story

Varesina set up in a 4-3-3 shape and tried to control possession through their central midfielders. Their full-backs pushed high, but Pistoiese’s 4-4-2 defensive block remained narrow and forced most attacks wide. That made it difficult for Varesina to find clean shooting angles inside the box.

Pistoiese were happy to concede territory without conceding chances. Their two central defenders dealt well with crosses, and the midfield tracked runners diligently. When they won the ball, they looked to attack directly, and that approach produced the only goal of the night.

Standout players

The Pistoiese goalkeeper was calm and reliable, especially on set pieces, while the centre-back partnership handled sustained second-half pressure. The matchwinner deserves credit for a well-timed run and composed finish. For Varesina, the central midfielder who kept the ball moving was their most consistent performer, but the team lacked a sharp final touch in the attacking third.

Season impact

This 1-0 result gives Pistoiese a valuable three points on the road and reinforces their reputation as a difficult team to break down. Varesina Calcio, meanwhile, will look at the match as a missed opportunity. They had enough possession to take something from the game, but in Serie D, matches are often decided by the smallest details. The standings remain tight, and both clubs will know that results like this can shape the mood around a season.
