Ligorna secured a hard-fought 1-0 away victory over Valenzana in Italian Serie D on Sunday night, with a second-half goal proving enough to separate two well-organised sides. The result rewarded Ligorna’s patience and defensive discipline, while Valenzana were left to rue a lack of cutting edge in the final third.

Match overview

The opening hour was tight and tactical. Valenzana held their shape well and tried to build attacks through midfield, but Ligorna’s compact defensive block made it difficult for the hosts to find clear openings. Clear chances were rare, and both goalkeepers were largely protected by their back fours.

The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute when Ligorna converted from a well-worked attacking sequence. Valenzana pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Ligorna dropped deeper, defended their box with concentration and restricted the home side to hopeful crosses and long-range efforts.

Key moments

• 21st minute: Valenzana’s first meaningful attack ended with a shot from distance that went narrowly wide.
• 39th minute: Ligorna threatened from a corner, but the header was cleared off the line.
• 63rd minute: Ligorna scored the only goal of the game with a low finish after a patient build-up.
• 77th minute: Valenzana’s best chance of the second half came from a free kick, but the goalkeeper saved comfortably.
• 90th minute: Ligorna cleared a late corner to secure the clean sheet and the win.

Tactical story

Ligorna’s game plan was clear: stay compact, deny space centrally and strike when the opportunity arose. Their midfield worked tirelessly without the ball, and the back four held a disciplined line. That structure frustrated Valenzana, who struggled to turn possession into genuine chances.

Valenzana will feel they had enough of the ball to take something from the match, but their best moments came from set pieces rather than open play. Ligorna’s organisation and willingness to defend their lead made the difference in a match that was always likely to be decided by a single goal.

Standout performers

Ligorna’s goalkeeper was reliable throughout, dealing confidently with crosses and making one important save late on. The goalscorer deserves credit for timing a run into the box and finishing calmly, while the centre-back pairing produced a commanding display. For Valenzana, the central midfielder was their most consistent performer, distributing well and trying to drive the team forward.

Serie D table impact

The three points are valuable for Ligorna and underline their ability to win tight away matches. Clean sheets are a strong foundation for any Serie D campaign, and this performance will please the coaching staff. Valenzana, meanwhile, remain in search of greater attacking fluency. Their defensive work was solid for long periods, but they must find a way to create clearer chances if they are to turn possession into points.

In the end, Ligorna’s 1-0 win was a classic away performance: organised, patient and decisive when the key moment arrived.
