USD Castellanzese and Varesina Calcio played out a competitive 1-1 draw in Serie D on Sunday, 25 October 2026, with both sides taking a point from a match that was tight, physical and often decided by small margins. Castellanzese led at half-time, but Varesina equalised after the break and pushed for a winner in the closing stages.

Match overview

The home side started brightly and took the lead in the 23rd minute after a period of sustained pressure. Castellanzese pressed well and forced Varesina into several hurried clearances, eventually creating the opening goal with a move that stretched the away defence from side to side.

Varesina responded with more control after the interval, keeping possession better and pushing their midfield higher. Their equaliser arrived in the 57th minute, and from that point the game opened up, with both teams creating chances but neither able to find a decisive second goal.

Key moments

• 23’ – Castellanzese take the lead with a first-time finish after a low cross from the right.
• 57’ – Varesina equalise through a well-placed shot from the edge of the penalty area.
• 74’ – Castellanzese hit the post from a header following a corner.
• 90+2’ – Varesina force a late save with a curling effort from distance.

The draw was a fair reflection of a game in which both teams had spells of control. Castellanzese were more direct in the first half, while Varesina’s second-half improvement gave them the better of the final half-hour.

Tactical story

Castellanzese’s approach was built on intensity and quick transitions. Their midfield pressed aggressively, and their wide players looked to get crosses into the box early. That strategy worked well in the first half, but it became harder to sustain as the game wore on.

Varesina adjusted after the break, using longer spells of possession to calm the tempo and draw Castellanzese out of shape. Their equaliser came from a more patient build-up, and their late pressure showed the value of keeping the ball in difficult moments. Defensively, both sides defended their boxes well when required.

Standout performers

Castellanzese’s goalkeeper produced two important saves, including the stoppage-time stop that preserved a point. Their central midfielder was also influential in the first half, breaking up play and starting attacks. For Varesina, the player who scored the equaliser was their most creative outlet, while their centre-back dealt confidently with a series of crosses.

Season impact

The point keeps both clubs moving in a crowded Serie D group, where consistency and defensive discipline are essential. Castellanzese will be pleased with their first-half performance but frustrated at failing to hold the lead. Varesina will take confidence from their second-half response and the character shown to earn a draw away from home.

With the margins between the sides so small, this was the kind of match that could be remembered at the end of the season as a hard-earned point rather than a missed opportunity. Both teams now turn to their next fixtures with areas to improve and positives to build on.
