US Siracusa claimed the Sicilian bragging rights with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Modica in Italian Serie D on 27 September 2026. A single goal was enough to separate the two island rivals, and it came in a match that was every bit as tight and tense as the local rivalry suggested it would be.

One Goal, Three Points

Siracusa came into the fixture with the weight of expectation that follows one of the most storied clubs in southern Italian football, and Modica arrived determined to frustrate them. For long spells, that is exactly what happened. The visitors defended deep, closed the central corridors and forced Siracusa to circulate the ball around the edge of the final third without finding a way through.

The decisive moment arrived when Siracusa finally manufactured the bit of quality the game had been missing, converting to take a lead that their territorial dominance deserved. From there, the match became a test of nerve, and the hosts passed it.

Key Moments

• The breakthrough: Siracusa's pressure told as they found the net to take a 1-0 lead.
• Modica's push: The visitors responded by committing men forward in search of an equaliser.
• Late resistance: Siracusa defended their box with determination through the closing stages to protect the clean sheet.

Tactical Story

Siracusa's approach was patient and possession-based, probing for gaps rather than forcing the issue. Their full-backs pushed high to add width, and the midfield rotated cleverly to find pockets of space between Modica's defensive lines. Modica's counter-attacking plan was well executed in defence but rarely threatened at the other end, with their best moments coming from set pieces. The difference between the teams was simply a touch of quality in the decisive area.

Standout Performers and Season Impact

The Siracusa goalkeeper and central defenders merit praise for a clean sheet that was protected under late pressure, while the goalscorer will rightly take the plaudits for the moment that decided the derby. Modica's back line was organised and committed throughout, and their performance suggested they will be difficult opponents for anyone in the division.

The win keeps Siracusa moving in the right direction in the Serie D standings and adds another positive result to their home record. For Modica, a narrow defeat in a derby is a painful way to leave empty-handed, but there were enough encouraging signs to suggest better results are close.
