Sanremese 1-0 Sestri Levante was decided by a single moment of quality in a tense Serie D Girone A fixture on 18 October 2026. Sanremese’s disciplined home performance earned them a narrow victory, while Sestri Levante were left frustrated after creating enough pressure to take something from the match.

Match overview

The game was tightly contested from the start, with both sides wary of the other’s counter-attacking threat. Sanremese looked to build patiently and use set pieces as a weapon, while Sestri Levante pressed aggressively in midfield and tried to force mistakes. Clear chances were limited in the first half, but the intensity and physicality of the contest never dropped.

Sanremese found the breakthrough just after the hour mark, and from there they defended with organisation and determination. Sestri Levante pushed bodies forward in the closing stages and delivered several dangerous crosses, but the home side’s back line and goalkeeper held firm to secure a valuable clean sheet.

Key moments

• 23rd minute: Sanremese’s first real opening came from a corner, but the header drifted wide.
• 57th minute: Sestri Levante’s best chance of the first hour was saved low by the Sanremese goalkeeper.
• 64th minute: Sanremese scored the only goal, converting a well-worked set piece with a close-range finish.
• 86th minute: A late Sestri Levante header was cleared off the line as the home side survived a nervy finish.

Tactical story

Sanremese set up with a compact midfield and looked to deny central spaces, forcing Sestri Levante wide. That approach worked well for long stretches, as the visitors struggled to find clear passing lanes into the penalty area. Sanremese’s goal came from a set piece, reflecting their willingness to make the most of dead-ball situations.

Sestri Levante responded by increasing their tempo and pushing their full-backs higher. They created late chances, but Sanremese’s defenders stayed disciplined, defended crosses with authority and protected the near post. It was not a spectacular performance from the home side, but it was an effective one.

Standout performers

Sanremese’s goalkeeper was central to the win, making a crucial second-half save and commanding his box during the late aerial barrage. The goalscorer deserved credit for a composed finish, while the centre-back pairing dealt with Sestri Levante’s pressure. For the visitors, the left-sided attacker was their most dangerous outlet, but the final ball too often lacked precision.

What it means

The three points give Sanremese a solid platform in the Serie D Girone A standings and reward their defensive discipline. Sestri Levante will feel they deserved more from the performance, but they must turn territorial pressure into clearer chances. In a division as tight as Serie D, narrow defeats can quickly affect momentum.
