Reggina produced a controlled and professional display on 27 September 2026, beating Igea Virtus 2-0 in Italian Serie D. The Calabrian giants, watched by an expectant home support, were patient, organised and ultimately deserving of a victory that never seriously looked in doubt once they took the lead.

Match overview

Reggina entered the contest as the side with the greater expectation, and they played like a team comfortable with that burden. Igea Virtus arrived with a clear plan: defend in a compact shape, slow the game down and look for counter-attacking opportunities. For a while, the plan held.

The hosts dominated possession from the opening minutes, circulating the ball from side to side in search of a gap. Igea Virtus's back line held firm through the early pressure, but the constant movement and the quality of Reggina's final-third play gradually wore them down.

Key moments

• Early pressure: Reggina forced a string of corners inside the first 20 minutes, with the Igea Virtus goalkeeper busy and alert.
• Opening goal: The breakthrough came from a move that started on the halfway line and ended with a composed finish inside the penalty area, making it 1-0.
• Second goal: Reggina doubled the advantage with a goal that showcased their attacking fluency, a quick exchange of passes cutting through the visiting defence.
• Late control: With the points secured, Reggina managed the closing stages professionally, keeping possession and limiting Igea Virtus to hopeful balls forward.

Tactical story

Reggina's shape allowed their midfielders to push high and support the attack without leaving the defence exposed. The full-backs provided width, stretching Igea Virtus horizontally, while the central midfielders kept the ball moving quickly to prevent the visitors from setting their defensive block.

Igea Virtus defended with discipline but struggled to sustain possession when they won it back. Too often, their clearances returned immediately, and the sheer weight of Reggina's attacks meant the Sicilian side spent the majority of the match chasing the ball. Their best moments came from set pieces, but Reggina's handling of aerial balls was assured throughout.

Standout players

Reggina's midfield was the engine room of the performance, dictating tempo and winning the second balls that kept the pressure on. The goalscorers took their chances well, and the centre-backs were rarely troubled, reading the game intelligently and stepping up to intercept passes before Igea Virtus could build momentum.

For Igea Virtus, the goalkeeper was the standout performer despite the defeat, making several saves that kept the scoreline respectable. Their captain in defence also produced a battling display, organising those around him and clearing danger repeatedly.

What it means for the table

Wins like this are the foundation of a promotion push. Reggina add three points and a clean sheet to their Serie D campaign, building confidence and reinforcing the sense that they can grind out results even when the opposition sets up defensively. Igea Virtus, meanwhile, will look to take the lessons from a difficult away day and convert them into points on home soil.
