San Nicolò returned from Montecchio Maggiore with a narrow but thoroughly earned 1-0 victory on Sunday evening, thanks to a second-half goal and a defensive performance built on patience, concentration and one outstanding goalkeeping display. In a Serie D fixture short on clear chances, the visitors found the single moment of quality that mattered and then protected it with a disciplined rearguard action in the closing twenty minutes.

Match Overview

For long stretches this looked like a match destined to end goalless. Montecchio Maggiore enjoyed more of the ball and played with ambition, but they struggled to break down a well-organised San Nicolò defence that defended its penalty area with real determination. The visitors, meanwhile, were content to attack in bursts and looked increasingly dangerous as the game wore on.

The breakthrough arrived in the 76th minute, when Sartori found half a yard of space inside the box and guided his shot past the goalkeeper. It was the sort of finish that rewarded San Nicolò's willingness to keep pushing bodies forward despite spending much of the match on the back foot, and it proved enough to decide the contest.

Key Moments

• 18' — A fine diving save from San Nicolò's goalkeeper denies Montecchio Maggiore the opener
• 44' — The hosts head narrowly over from a well-delivered free kick
• 76' — 0-1: Sartori scores the only goal of the game for San Nicolò
• 86' — Montecchio Maggiore's best late chance is blocked on the goal line
• 90+4' — San Nicolò clear a final corner to secure the win

Tactical Story

Montecchio Maggiore set up to dominate possession and did so, but their build-up play too often stopped at the edge of the final third. San Nicolò's compact 4-4-2, with two disciplined banks of four, forced the home side into hopeful crosses and long-range efforts — exactly the outcome the visiting coach wanted.

The defining tactical feature of the night was the goalkeeping performance. Time and again, Montecchio Maggiore worked shooting opportunities, and time and again they were repelled. As the game progressed, the home side's frustration grew, their full-backs pushed higher, and the space that opened up was exactly what San Nicolò needed to score the winning goal on the counter-attack.

Standout Players

Mattia Zecchin, San Nicolò's goalkeeper, was the man of the match by a comfortable margin, producing a string of saves that kept his team level before the goal arrived. Sartori took his chance clinically and worked relentlessly as the lone outlet in attack. In defence, Riccardo Bortolami read the game excellently and intercepted several dangerous deliveries.

For Montecchio Maggiore, midfielder Luca Pegoraro was the most persistent threat, dictating play and testing the goalkeeper twice from distance. Striker Filippo Zanetti held the ball up well but was starved of quality service in the decisive moments.

Season Impact

The three points are a significant boost for San Nicolò, who proved they can win difficult away fixtures even when they do not control possession — a trait that is invaluable over the course of a long Serie D campaign. Montecchio Maggiore, meanwhile, are left to reflect on a familiar problem: plenty of the ball, plenty of effort, but not enough cutting edge in the final third. Turning territorial dominance into goals will decide whether their season becomes a comfortable one or a nervous one.
