Venafro Edge Gelbison 1-0 in Italian Serie D

Venafro secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Gelbison in Italian Serie D on Sunday evening. The match, played on 4 October 2026 at 21:00, was decided by a single second-half goal, as Venafro's disciplined defensive performance frustrated the hosts. The win lifts Venafro up the table, while Gelbison are left to rue a lack of cutting edge in front of goal.

Match Overview

Gelbison started the game on the front foot, dominating possession and creating several early chances. Their best opportunity came in the 14th minute when a header from a corner was cleared off the line. However, Venafro's defence held firm, and the visitors gradually grew into the contest, threatening on the counter-attack.

The only goal of the game arrived in the 67th minute. A quick break down the right caught Gelbison's defence out of position, and a low cross was converted at the far post. Gelbison pushed hard for an equaliser, throwing bodies forward, but Venafro's goalkeeper made two excellent saves in the final 15 minutes to preserve the clean sheet. The final whistle sparked celebrations among the Venafro players, who celebrated a hard-fought three points.

• 67th minute: Venafro score the winning goal with a low finish at the far post after a swift counter-attack.

Tactical Story

Gelbison lined up in a 4-3-3 and looked to control the game through possession. They moved the ball well in midfield but struggled to break down a deep-lying Venafro defence. Their crossing was often inaccurate, and they lacked a clinical finisher in the box. As the game wore on, frustration crept in, and their passing became more rushed.

Venafro set up in a 5-3-2 formation, prioritising defensive solidity and quick transitions. Their goal was a perfect example of their game plan: win the ball, break quickly, and finish with precision. They defended in numbers, with the wing-backs dropping deep and the midfield shielding the back three. It was a textbook away performance, and the clean sheet was thoroughly deserved.

Standout Players

Venafro's goalkeeper was the man of the match, making several vital saves, especially in the closing stages. The goalscorer also impressed with his movement and composure, while the centre-backs were rock-solid at the heart of defence. For Gelbison, the central midfielder worked tirelessly and created a few chances, but the forward line failed to capitalise on the service provided.

Table and Season Impact

The three points move Venafro into a more comfortable position in the Italian Serie D standings, and they will take great confidence from this defensive display. Gelbison, meanwhile, remain under pressure after failing to win at home. They will need to find a solution to their goalscoring problems quickly if they are to climb the table. In a league where margins are fine, Venafro's ability to grind out results could prove crucial in the race for promotion.
