Foligno Calcio 1-0 San Nicolo: Narrow Home Win Built on Defensive Discipline

Foligno Calcio edged San Nicolo 1-0 in Italian Serie D on 20 September 2026, with a single second-half goal settling a tight and tactical contest. The home side controlled long stretches of the match without ever running away with it, and their defensive concentration proved enough to protect the narrow advantage until full-time.

The three points lift Foligno’s confidence after a hard-fought evening at the Stadio Enzo Blasone, while San Nicolo will feel they deserved more from a game in which they defended stubbornly and threatened sporadically on the break.

Match Overview

Foligno Calcio began with intent, moving the ball quickly through midfield and looking to isolate their wide forwards against San Nicolo’s full-backs. The visitors responded by dropping into a deep, organised block, conceding possession but limiting clear sights of goal. The first half was largely a story of Foligno probing and San Nicolo repelling.

After the interval, Foligno increased the tempo. They pushed their midfield line higher, won more second balls and began to create genuine chances. The decisive moment came just after the hour mark, and from that point on, game management became the priority.

Key Moments

• 27th minute – Foligno pressure: A low cross from the left was turned behind for a corner, and the resulting delivery caused panic before San Nicolo cleared.
• 61st minute – Foligno 1-0: Luca Santini found the breakthrough with a precise finish from just inside the penalty area. A quick exchange of passes opened space, and Santini guided the ball into the bottom corner.
• 84th minute – San Nicolo chance: The visitors’ best opportunity arrived from a long throw, but a glancing header flashed wide of the far post.

Tactical Story

Foligno set up in a 4-2-3-1 that allowed their attacking midfielder to drift between the lines. The two holding midfielders shielded the defence and recycled possession efficiently, ensuring San Nicolo rarely enjoyed sustained pressure. When Foligno lost the ball, their counter-press was immediate, often pinning the visitors inside their own half.

San Nicolo’s 5-3-2 system was designed to frustrate. They defended the width of the penalty area well and forced Foligno into crosses, which the centre-backs dealt with for long periods. The problem was going forward: with only two strikers, San Nicolo struggled to hold the ball up, and their wing-backs were often too deep to support attacks.

Standout Performers

Luca Santini’s match-winning goal was the highlight of a sharp attacking display, and his movement repeatedly pulled San Nicolo’s defenders out of position. Foligno’s captain in midfield dictated the pace of the game, while the central defenders were commanding in the air and alert to danger on the ground.

San Nicolo’s goalkeeper produced a string of saves to keep the score at 1-0, and their sweeper in the back three read the game well. The attacking pair worked hard but were starved of quality service for much of the night.

Serie D Standings Impact

The 1-0 victory adds three important points to Foligno Calcio’s Serie D total and gives them a solid platform for the next round of fixtures. San Nicolo remain within touching distance of their rivals, but they will need to convert more of their defensive resilience into attacking output if they are to move up the standings. In a division where margins are often tiny, Foligno’s ability to win narrowly could prove valuable over the course of the season.
