Derthona 1-3 Alessandria: Visitors Secure Derby Victory in Serie D

Alessandria claimed a convincing 3-1 win over local rivals Derthona in Italian Serie D on Sunday evening, extending their strong run of form and deepening Derthona's struggles. The match, played at the Stadio Fausto Coppi in Tortona, saw Alessandria score three unanswered goals before a late consolation for the hosts.

Derthona started brightly but were undone by Alessandria's clinical finishing and tactical discipline. The visitors' experience and quality in the final third proved the difference, as they moved into a commanding lead before half-time and controlled the second period.

Match Overview

The home side began with energy, pressing Alessandria high and creating a half-chance inside the first five minutes. However, Alessandria weathered the early storm and took the lead in the 18th minute with a well-crafted goal—a through ball split the defence, and the striker rounded the goalkeeper to score.

The second goal arrived ten minutes later, a curling free-kick from the edge of the box that found the top corner. Derthona were stunned, and Alessandria added a third just before the break, capitalising on a defensive mix-up to tap into an empty net.

Key Moments

• 18th minute: Alessandria open the scoring with a composed finish after a through ball.
• 28th minute: A superb free-kick doubles the lead.
• 44th minute: A defensive error allows Alessandria to make it 3-0.
• 76th minute: Derthona pull one back with a header from a corner.

The second half was more even, with Derthona showing improved urgency and creating several chances. Their persistence paid off in the 76th minute when a corner was headed home at the near post. However, Alessandria managed the game expertly, slowing the tempo and keeping the ball away from danger.

Tactical Story

Alessandria lined up in a compact 4-4-2, looking to absorb pressure and hit on the counter. Their midfield four sat narrow, forcing Derthona wide and then winning the ball in the air. When they attacked, they moved the ball quickly through the lines, exploiting spaces behind Derthona's advanced full-backs.

Derthona's 4-2-3-1 left them vulnerable to counter-attacks. Their two holding midfielders struggled to cover the space in front of the defence, and Alessandria's strikers repeatedly found pockets of room. The home side improved after introducing fresh legs, but the game was already lost.

Standout Players

Alessandria's striker was a constant menace, scoring one and setting up another with intelligent movement. The free-kick scorer showed excellent technique, and the centre-backs were rock-solid, winning headers and making timely interceptions. In midfield, the captain dictated the tempo and broke up play effectively.

For Derthona, the substitute winger made a positive impact after coming on, providing the assist for the consolation goal. The goalkeeper, despite conceding three, made several saves to prevent a heavier defeat.

Serie D Table Impact

This victory strengthens Alessandria's position in the Serie D standings and keeps them in the hunt for promotion. Derthona, meanwhile, remain in the bottom half and will need to improve quickly to avoid a relegation battle. The derby defeat will hurt, but the response in the second half offers a glimmer of hope for the matches ahead.
