Sestri Levante 1-0 Pistoiese: Late Goal Settles Tight Italian Serie D Cup Clash

Sestri Levante booked their place in the next round of the Italian Serie D Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Pistoiese on October 7, 2026, at the Stadio Giuseppe Sivori. A single second-half goal was enough to separate two evenly matched sides in a cagey, tactical encounter.

Match Overview

The first half was a story of two defenses on top. Sestri Levante and Pistoiese cancelled each other out, with chances few and far between. The visitors from Tuscany enjoyed slightly more possession, but they struggled to find a way through a well-organized Sestri Levante backline. The hosts, meanwhile, looked dangerous on set pieces and nearly took the lead from a corner in the 28th minute.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 74th minute when Andrea Moretti found space at the far post and tapped in a low cross. Pistoiese pushed hard for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Sestri Levante's defense held firm to secure a clean sheet and a place in the next round.

Key Moments

• 28' — Sestri Levante's best chance of the first half: a header from a corner flashes just wide.
• 45+1' — Pistoiese's striker is denied by a brilliant last-ditch tackle.
• 74' — GOAL! Andrea Moretti slots home from close range after a sweeping move.
• 82' — Pistoiese hit the crossbar with a fierce free-kick.
• 90+4' — Sestri Levante's goalkeeper claims a dangerous cross to seal the win.

Tactical Story

Sestri Levante deployed a disciplined 4-4-2, sitting deep and frustrating Pistoiese's midfield creators. Their two banks of four were compact, forcing the visitors into wide areas where crosses were easily dealt with. Pistoiese used a 4-2-3-1 and tried to overload the flanks, but their final ball was often lacking.

The tactical battle shifted when Sestri Levante introduced fresh legs in the 65th minute, adding pace on the break. The winning goal came from exactly that kind of transition: a quick turnover in midfield, a driving run, and a precise cross for Moretti to finish. Pistoiese's late surge was commendable, but they lacked the cutting edge to find an equalizer.

Standout Players

Andrea Moretti was the difference-maker, his movement in the box creating the decisive goal. Sestri Levante's goalkeeper, Matteo Bianchi, was outstanding, making two crucial saves and commanding his area. For Pistoiese, midfielder Lorenzo Conti dictated play and hit the crossbar, but he was left to rue his side's missed chances.

Serie D Cup Context and What It Means

The Italian Serie D Cup is a valuable opportunity for clubs at this level to gain momentum and financial rewards. For Sestri Levante, the win builds confidence and keeps their cup dreams alive. Pistoiese, meanwhile, will focus on their league campaign, where they are expected to challenge for promotion. The narrow margin shows just how competitive the Serie D Cup can be, with little to separate teams from different regions.

Sestri Levante now advance, while Pistoiese will regroup and look to bounce back in their next fixture.
