Piacenza secured a 2-0 victory over ASD Sasso Marconi in the Italian Serie D Cup on 28 October 2026, advancing with a controlled performance at home. Two well-taken goals and a disciplined defensive display gave Piacenza the edge in a cup tie that was competitive but rarely slipped away from them.

Match overview

Piacenza began with purpose, pressing Sasso Marconi’s back line and forcing early mistakes. The home side dominated possession in the opening half-hour and were rewarded when Matteo Cesarini finished off a sharp attacking move. Sasso Marconi responded with a more compact shape and tried to threaten on the break, but clear chances were hard to come by.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Piacenza managed the game well, slowed the tempo when needed and struck again through Andrea Ferrari’s header. Sasso Marconi kept working and had a few promising moments from set pieces, but Piacenza’s goalkeeper and centre-backs dealt with the pressure comfortably.

Key moments

• 27th minute: Matteo Cesarini opened the scoring for Piacenza with a low, first-time finish after a turnover in midfield.
• 44th minute: Sasso Marconi’s Federico Lodi forced a save from Piacenza’s goalkeeper with a curling effort from outside the box.
• 58th minute: Andrea Ferrari doubled the lead with a powerful header from a corner.
• 73rd minute: Sasso Marconi defender Davide Righi cleared a goal-bound shot off the line as Piacenza pressed for a third.
• 84th minute: Piacenza goalkeeper Giacomo Pini made a late save to preserve the clean sheet.

Tactical story

Piacenza’s 3-5-2 system gave them width in possession and allowed the wing-backs to push high against Sasso Marconi’s back four. The midfield trio controlled the central areas, winning second balls and feeding the front two with quick passes into the channels. Piacenza’s first goal came from exactly that kind of pressure, with Sasso Marconi unable to clear their lines cleanly.

Sasso Marconi defended with a 4-4-2 block and looked to counter through the wide areas. They had moments of success, particularly when Piacenza’s wing-backs were caught upfield, but the final pass was often missing. As the game wore on, Piacenza’s superior control and substitutes helped them keep the tie at arm’s length.

Standout performers

Cesarini was Piacenza’s most influential attacker, linking play and finding space between the lines before opening the scoring. Ferrari’s aerial presence made him a constant threat from set pieces, and his header effectively settled the contest. In midfield, Luca Bertini set the tempo and protected the back three with timely interceptions.

Sasso Marconi’s goalkeeper, Giacomo Pini, deserved credit for keeping the scoreline respectable with several saves. Righi also stood out for his defensive commitment, including a goal-line clearance that prevented Piacenza from pulling further ahead. Despite the defeat, Sasso Marconi’s organisation and work rate gave them something to build on.

What the result means

The 2-0 win sends Piacenza through in the Italian Serie D Cup and adds momentum to their season. Cup runs can be valuable for morale, especially when they are built on clean sheets and controlled performances. For Sasso Marconi, the challenge is to recover quickly and turn their defensive discipline into more attacking output in the league.

Piacenza will be pleased with the professionalism of the display. They scored at important moments, defended their lead well and managed the closing stages without panic. In knockout football, that combination is often enough to make the difference.
