Clodiense claimed a 1-0 away win over Calcio Schio in the Italian Serie D Cup on Wednesday night, with a second-half set-piece goal settling a tense, physical cup tie.

The visitors defended with discipline and took the one clear chance that came their way, while Schio will rue a series of half-chances that never quite tested the Clodiense goalkeeper enough. The result sends Clodiense through and leaves Schio to focus on league matters after a frustrating evening in front of their own supporters.

Match overview

The Serie D Cup — known formally as the Coppa Italia Serie D — gives clubs from Italy’s fourth tier a chance to measure themselves against unfamiliar opposition, and this tie had the classic cup feel: plenty of intensity, little space and a single moment deciding the outcome. Calcio Schio, based in the Veneto region, tried to impose a passing game, while Clodiense sat compact and looked to threaten from set pieces and transitions.

Clodiense’s game plan worked almost perfectly. They conceded possession for long stretches but limited Schio to shots from distance and defended their penalty area with real determination.

How the goal arrived

The decisive moment came in the 63rd minute. Clodiense won a corner on the right, and the delivery was met by a powerful run from the centre-back, who glanced a header inside the far post. The goal was greeted with a roar from the travelling support and changed the mood of the contest entirely.

Schio responded with their best spell of pressure. They pushed their full-backs higher, moved the ball quicker around the box and forced a series of corners of their own. But Clodiense’s goalkeeper was equal to everything, and the visitors’ back line threw bodies in front of shots when required.

Key moments

• 21st minute: Schio’s first real sight of goal ends with a low shot saved comfortably.
• 39th minute: Clodiense threaten on the break, but the final pass is overhit.
• 63rd minute: Clodiense score the opener with a header from a right-wing corner.
• 72nd minute: Schio’s best chance is blocked on the line after a goalmouth scramble.
• 88th minute: Clodiense’s goalkeeper claims a dangerous cross to relieve the pressure.

Tactical story

Schio set up with a back four and two deep midfielders, looking to build patiently and use their wide players in one-on-one situations. The problem was the final third: crosses were often cleared, and central runs were crowded out by Clodiense’s back three. When Schio did find space, their finishing lacked composure.

Clodiense’s 5-3-2 shape was designed to absorb pressure and counter. Their wing-backs stayed disciplined, the midfield three screened the back line, and the front two worked tirelessly to hold the ball up. The set-piece goal was no accident: Clodiense had targeted the far post all evening, and the delivery finally found the right runner.

Standout performers

Clodiense’s centre-back was the match-winner, not only for the goal but for a commanding defensive display. The goalkeeper also deserves credit for a composed performance under late pressure. For Schio, the left winger was their most persistent threat, while the central midfielder kept the ball moving well but lacked support in the box.

What the result means

Clodiense move on in the Coppa Italia Serie D with confidence, having shown they can win in a difficult away environment without dominating the ball. Schio exit the cup but can take encouragement from their territorial control; the challenge now is turning possession into goals in the league. Cup football can be cruel, and on this occasion one set piece was enough to separate the sides.
