Calcio Schio secured a 2-0 away victory at AC Mestre on 7 October 2026, ending the home side's Coppa Italia Serie D run with a disciplined and increasingly dominant performance. Two goals after the interval settled a fixture that had been finely balanced for the first hour.

Match Overview

The 21:00 kick-off at the Stadio Francesco Baracca brought together two clubs with very different footballing identities. AC Mestre, playing in front of their own supporters, looked to control possession and build patiently from the back. Calcio Schio, travelling from the province of Vicenza, were content to sit slightly deeper, compress the space between the lines and strike on the break.

For 45 minutes it was a genuine stalemate. Mestre held the ball, Schio held their shape, and clear chances were scarce at both ends. The second half told a different story: the visitors grew bolder, took the lead shortly after the restart and then added a second goal that reflected their growing control of the contest.

Key Moments

• 29': Mestre's best opening of the first half — a low cross is turned wide from six yards with the goal at his mercy.
• 48' – 0-1: Schio break the deadlock within three minutes of the restart, finishing calmly after a quick counter.
• 57': A goal-line clearance keeps Mestre within one goal after a scramble from a corner.
• 73' – 0-2: Schio double the lead, converting from the penalty spot after a foul inside the area.
• 85': Mestre are reduced to ten men following a second yellow card, ending any realistic hope of a comeback.

Tactical Story

Mestre's game plan was clear and, for a while, effective: dominate the ball, push the full-backs high and look to overload the wide areas. The problem was penetration. Schio defended with two compact banks of four and refused to be dragged out of position, meaning Mestre's possession frequently circulated sideways rather than vertically.

Schio's own plan was the mirror image, and it worked. Their midfielders pressed the second ball aggressively, their wingers sprinted into the channels the moment possession was won, and their centre-backs defended the box with authority. Once ahead, they became even more comfortable, dropping deeper, slowing the tempo and inviting Mestre into a fight they were never going to win on the night.

Standout Performers

Schio's captain was the game's most influential figure, breaking up attacks in midfield and setting the tempo of every counter-attack. The goalscorer who opened the scoring showed excellent composure, while the visiting goalkeeper commanded his area well and dealt confidently with a stream of second-half crosses.

For Mestre, the right-back was their most consistent outlet and delivered several dangerous balls into the box, but the home side's attacking players struggled to convert territory into genuine chances. The late dismissal summed up a frustrating evening.

What It Means

Calcio Schio progress in the Coppa Italia Serie D with a clean sheet and a professional away performance to their name, exactly the kind of result that builds belief for the league season ahead. AC Mestre are eliminated, and their priority now shifts to addressing a familiar problem: plenty of possession, not enough cutting edge. In knockout football, that combination almost always ends the same way.
