ASD Monastir secured a narrow but fully deserved 2-1 victory over ASD Aranova on Sunday 20 September 2026, delivering three points to their home supporters in Italian Serie D. In a game that swung back and forth, the Sardinians found the extra quality in the final third to edge a contest that was ultimately decided by small margins.

Aranova, travelling from Lazio, contributed fully to an entertaining evening and will feel they created enough to take something from the match, but a defensive lapse proved costly in a division where errors are punished immediately.

Match overview

Monastir began with confidence, moving the ball quickly through midfield and looking to attack the channels either side of Aranova's centre-backs. The early pressure told, and the hosts took the lead with a well-taken goal following a sustained spell of possession in the attacking third.

Aranova responded positively rather than retreating. Their equaliser came from a slick passing move that cut through the home defence, and for a period the visitors looked the more likely side to score again. Monastir, though, regained their composure before half time and re-established control of the midfield.

The winning goal arrived in the second half, finished off after a scramble in the penalty area that Aranova failed to clear. From that point on, Monastir defended with a mixture of organisation and commitment, blocking shots and heading clear a steady stream of crosses to preserve their advantage.

Key moments

• 1-0 Monastir: A patient attacking move was rewarded with an opening goal from inside the area.
• 1-1 Aranova: The visitors equalised with a flowing move, finishing neatly at the near post.
• 2-1 Monastir: A failure to clear a loose ball in the box allowed the hosts to score the winner.
• Defensive stand: Two late blocks in the final ten minutes, including one on the goal line, kept Aranova out.

Tactical story

Monastir's 4-2-3-1 shape gave them numerical superiority in central areas, and their two holding midfielders were excellent at recycling possession and switching play. Their attacking midfielder found space repeatedly between Aranova's lines, which was the source of both goals.

Aranova favoured a more direct approach, using a target forward to hold the ball up while runners broke beyond him. That worked well during their best spell in the first half, but as the game wore on, the supply dried up and the visitors' attacks became more predictable. Their set-piece delivery was a constant threat, yet the final contact was frequently lacking.

Standout players

The Monastir attacking midfielder was the game's most influential player, linking midfield and attack and creating the space that produced the winning goal. The centre-back who made the goal-line clearance in the closing stages effectively secured the three points, while the goalkeeper handled confidently under late pressure.

Aranova's target forward gave the home defence a difficult evening with his hold-up play, and their right-back was energetic going forward, delivering several dangerous crosses. The visiting goalkeeper made two important saves to keep the deficit to a single goal.

What it means for the Serie D table

Winning home matches is the currency of survival and progress in Serie D, and Monastir have banked a valuable three points here. The manner of the victory, combining attacking fluency with late defensive resilience, will please the coaching staff as much as the scoreline.

Aranova leave with nothing despite a spirited display. The margins in Girone G are thin, and cutting out the kind of defensive hesitation that led to the second goal will be the priority as the season develops. Their attacking play suggests better results are within reach.
