Spezia secured a 2-1 win over Atalanta U23 in Italian Serie C, with a late goal settling a tight contest at the Stadio Alberto Picco. The home side had to work hard for the points against a young Atalanta side full of energy and ambition, and the decisive moment arrived when Spezia’s pressure finally told in the closing stages.

Match overview

Spezia enjoyed more of the ball in the first half and looked to impose themselves through quick passing and movement in wide areas. Atalanta U23, as expected, were well organised and comfortable in possession, using their younger legs to press and counter at speed. The first half was competitive rather than free-flowing, with both teams cautious about leaving space behind.

The game opened up after the interval. Spezia raised the tempo and created better chances, while Atalanta U23 remained dangerous on the break. The visitors’ equaliser gave them belief, but Spezia’s experience and home support helped them push again for the winning goal.

• Atalanta U23 respond: The visitors equalised with a sharp counter-attack, catching Spezia out of shape.
• Goalkeeping interventions: Both goalkeepers made important saves as the match became stretched.

Tactical story

Spezia’s game plan centred on controlling midfield and using width to stretch Atalanta U23’s back line. Their full-backs were active, and the front players kept making runs into the channels. Atalanta U23 defended in a compact block and looked to spring forward quickly when they won possession, which made them a constant threat even without dominating the ball.

Ultimately, Spezia’s greater experience in managing the closing stages paid off. They kept their structure, continued to put crosses into dangerous areas and were rewarded for their persistence. Atalanta U23 will take encouragement from the performance, but the result shows how fine the margins can be in Serie C.

Standout performers

Spezia’s midfield set the tone with disciplined passing and strong running, while the defence recovered well after a shaky spell following Atalanta’s equaliser. The winning goal came from the hosts’ willingness to commit bodies forward. For Atalanta U23, the goalkeeper and central defenders produced several important interventions, and their attacking players showed pace and composure on the counter.

Table impact

The victory is a valuable one for Spezia in the Serie C standings, keeping them in the hunt at the top end of the table. Atalanta U23 leave with a narrow defeat but can take heart from a competitive display against an experienced side. For Spezia, the focus will be on turning tight home wins into more comfortable performances as the season progresses.
