Cittadella produced a patient comeback to beat Union Brescia 2-1 in the Italian Serie C PRO Cup on Thursday, turning a bright start from the home side into a narrow but deserved cup victory. Union Brescia began with energy and took the lead, but Cittadella stayed calm, improved as the match wore on and found the decisive goal in the second half.

Match overview

The cup tie was played at a good tempo from the opening whistle. Union Brescia pressed high, tried to force mistakes in Cittadella’s build-up and were rewarded with the first goal of the night. The home side’s movement down the right created space, and a low delivery into the box was converted to give Brescia a 1-0 advantage.

Cittadella responded without panic. They began to hold possession for longer spells, pushed their wing-backs higher and started to pin Brescia back. The equaliser arrived before half-time after a patient passing move ended with a shot from the edge of the area. That goal changed the mood of the contest and set up a second half in which Cittadella looked the more controlled side.

Key moments

• First half: Union Brescia opened the scoring after a purposeful attack down the flank, with the home crowd responding to an energetic start.
• Before the break: Cittadella levelled through a well-worked move, finding space between Brescia’s midfield and defence.
• Second half: Cittadella took greater control of midfield and scored the winner after a quick transition, finishing calmly inside the box.
• Late pressure: Brescia pushed bodies forward in search of an equaliser, but Cittadella’s goalkeeper and back line held firm.

Tactical story

Union Brescia’s early approach was built on intensity and quick forward passes. It worked well in the opening quarter, but as the match went on, the home side struggled to sustain that pressure. Cittadella gradually adjusted their shape, won more second balls and forced Brescia to defend deeper.

Cittadella’s midfield was the difference in the second half. They circulated the ball more patiently, drew Brescia out of position and attacked the spaces left behind. The winning goal came from exactly that pattern: a regained ball, a direct forward pass and a composed finish. Brescia’s late surge created a few nervous moments, but clear chances were limited by Cittadella’s compact defending.

Standout performers

Cittadella’s goalkeeper deserved credit for a composed display and a late save that protected the lead. Their central midfielder also grew into the game, setting the tempo and linking defence with attack. For Union Brescia, the right-sided attacker was the most dangerous player in the first half, while the captain tried to drive the team forward late on.

What it means

The result gives Cittadella a valuable cup win and another boost of confidence in a competition that rewards squad depth and tactical discipline. For Union Brescia, the performance showed encouraging signs in attack, but the inability to turn early momentum into a full 90-minute display proved costly. In knockout football, small margins decide ties, and Cittadella managed those margins better on the night.
