Atalanta U23 Secure Composed Away Win at Gubbio

Atalanta U23 produced a mature away performance to beat Gubbio 2-0 in Italian Serie C on Sunday, 18 October 2026, combining a sharp first-half breakthrough with a disciplined second-half rearguard. The visitors were efficient rather than overwhelming, but their control of the key moments gave them a result that will be valued highly in the development side’s league campaign.

Gubbio began with positive intent in front of their home support, moving the ball wide early and trying to force Atalanta U23 into defensive errors. Instead, the visitors stayed compact, defended the central corridor well and looked dangerous whenever they won possession in midfield. That pattern produced the opening goal and set the tone for much of the evening.

Match Overview

The first half was competitive but low on clear-cut chances. Gubbio saw more of the ball in the opening 20 minutes, yet Atalanta U23’s structure made it difficult for the hosts to find space between the lines. The breakthrough arrived in the 24th minute when Lorenzo Bernasconi latched onto a quickly played forward pass, held off his marker and finished low into the far corner.

Gubbio responded with a spell of pressure before half-time, forcing two corners and a handful of crosses into the box, but Atalanta U23’s back line remained calm. The visitors doubled their advantage in the 78th minute through Matteo Rinaldi, whose curling effort from the edge of the area gave the Gubbio goalkeeper no chance. From there, Atalanta U23 managed the game professionally and limited the hosts to efforts from distance.

Key Moments

• 24th minute: Lorenzo Bernasconi opens the scoring for Atalanta U23 with a composed low finish after a quick transition.
• 39th minute: Gubbio’s best first-half chance is headed over from a deep cross as the hosts push for an equaliser.
• 55th minute: Atalanta U23 goalkeeper makes a strong save at his near post to preserve the lead.
• 78th minute: Matteo Rinaldi curls in the second goal to put the result beyond doubt.
• 86th minute: Gubbio push numbers forward, but Atalanta U23 defend a dangerous free-kick comfortably.

Tactical Story

Atalanta U23’s compact mid-block was the foundation of the win. The visitors allowed Gubbio to circulate the ball in less dangerous areas but closed down quickly whenever the hosts tried to progress through central midfield. Their transitions were direct, with the front players attacking space rather than waiting for slow build-up.

Gubbio’s width caused occasional problems, especially in the first half, but the final ball was inconsistent. As the game wore on, the hosts became more stretched in search of an equaliser, and that opened the space for Atalanta U23’s second goal. The visitors’ game management in the final 15 minutes was particularly impressive.

Standout Performers

Bernasconi’s opener was the defining individual moment, while Rinaldi’s control and late goal underlined his influence in midfield. Atalanta U23’s central defenders also deserve credit for keeping Gubbio’s forwards away from high-quality chances. For Gubbio, Tommaso Bianchi worked tirelessly in midfield and tried to drive his side forward, but the hosts lacked the final spark in the attacking third.

Season Impact

The three points give Atalanta U23 valuable momentum and another clean sheet to build on in the Serie C standings. For Gubbio, the defeat is a reminder that possession alone is not enough in a division where transitions and set-piece defending often decide matches. The hosts will need a sharper response in their next fixture, while Atalanta U23 can take confidence from a professional away display.
