Giugliano Calcio 1928 turned on the style at the Stadio Alberto De Cristofaro, dismantling Cosenza Calcio 1914 with a 5-2 victory in Italian Serie C. The Campanian side produced their most complete attacking display of the campaign, scoring five times against one of the most experienced squads in the division and sending a clear message to the rest of Girone C.

A statement win in Serie C

Played under the lights in front of a lively home crowd, the match was billed as a test of Giugliano's promotion credentials against a Cosenza side still adjusting to life in the third tier. By the final whistle, the question had been answered emphatically. Giugliano's movement, pressing and ruthlessness in the final third overwhelmed a Cosenza defence that had arrived with a reputation for organisation but left having conceded five times.

The result lifts Giugliano firmly into the playoff conversation and extends their strong home record, while Cosenza are left to reflect on a defensive collapse that undid some encouraging spells of possession.

How the goals arrived

Giugliano set the tone inside the opening quarter of an hour. Alessio Cinquegrana, leading the line in a fluid front three, opened the scoring with a first-time finish after a low cross was cut back from the right. The striker doubled his tally shortly before the hour, capping a move that began with a turnover in midfield and ended with a composed finish across the goalkeeper.

Between those goals, Mariano Esposito converted from the penalty spot after a Cosenza defender was penalised for a clumsy challenge inside the area. Cosenza briefly threatened a response on the stroke of half-time, Matteo Ferraro pulling one back with a sharp near-post finish to make it 2-1 and give the visitors a foothold.

Any hope of a comeback was extinguished in a devastating second-half spell. Daniele Ruocco swept home Giugliano's fourth following a slick exchange on the edge of the box, and Luca Amendola added a fifth late on with a curling effort from distance. Antonio Belmonte grabbed a consolation for Cosenza in the closing stages, but it was little more than a footnote on a chastening evening.

Tactical story

The contest was decided in midfield. Giugliano's three-man unit pressed aggressively, denying Cosenza's deep-lying playmaker the time to pick passes and forcing repeated turnovers in dangerous areas. Every regain was followed by a vertical pass, and Cosenza's back line struggled all evening with runners arriving from wide positions.

Cosenza's response was to push their full-backs higher after the interval, which briefly created overloads down the flanks but left them exposed to counter-attacks. Giugliano's fourth and fifth goals both came from exactly that scenario — a quick break exploited the space vacated by the visitors' advanced full-backs.

Standout performers

• Alessio Cinquegrana (Giugliano): A brace plus an assist, constantly stretching the Cosenza defence with runs in behind.
• Mariano Esposito (Giugliano): Controlled the tempo and converted his penalty with composure.
• Daniele Ruocco (Giugliano): The link between midfield and attack, involved in three of the five goals.
• Matteo Ferraro (Cosenza): The visitors' brightest spark, taking his goal well and working tirelessly without support.

What it means for the table

For Giugliano, the three points reinforce a season built on home dominance and give the squad genuine belief that a playoff push is realistic. The margin of victory could also prove valuable come the end of the season, when goal difference often separates clubs fighting for the same positions in Serie C.

Cosenza, meanwhile, face a period of introspection. Their attacking play showed flashes of quality, but conceding five goals in a single fixture raises serious questions about shape and concentration. The coaching staff will be demanding a far more compact defensive display in the next round of fixtures.
