Cavese 2-3 AS Sorrento Calcio: Five-Goal Thriller Ends in Away Joy

AS Sorrento Calcio claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory away to Cavese in Italian Serie C, winning a five-goal contest that swung back and forth until the closing stages. The visitors showed remarkable attacking quality and no small amount of character to leave with all three points.

For Cavese, it was a painful defeat. They twice fought their way back into the match but were undone by a late goal that left the home supporters stunned.

Match Overview

The game started at a frantic pace. Sorrento looked dangerous whenever they attacked, using quick combinations to slice through Cavese’s midfield. Cavese, roared on by their home crowd, responded with direct running and set-piece pressure. The first half alone produced three goals, setting the tone for an end-to-end encounter.

After the break, Cavese pushed for an equaliser and eventually found one, only for Sorrento to strike the decisive blow in the final minutes. It was a match that showcased the best and worst of both teams: thrilling going forward, but vulnerable at the back.

Key Moments

• Sorrento opener: A crisp move down the left ended with a low finish into the far corner.
• Cavese response: The hosts equalised from a corner, with a powerful header that gave the goalkeeper no chance.
• Sorrento regain lead: A mistake in the Cavese defence was punished immediately, as Sorrento’s forward rounded the keeper and scored.
• Cavese equalise again: A superb individual effort from the edge of the box brought the home side level once more.
• Late winner: Sorrento grabbed the winner in the 88th minute, finishing calmly after a rapid counter-attack.

Tactical Story

Sorrento’s 4-3-3 was built around quick vertical passes and aggressive pressing. They targeted Cavese’s high defensive line and repeatedly found space behind the full-backs. Cavese, meanwhile, relied on crosses and second balls, which brought them two goals but also left them exposed to counters.

The decisive tactical battle was in midfield. Sorrento’s central trio won the majority of loose balls and turned defence into attack quickly. Cavese’s midfield struggled to track runners, especially in the closing stages when fatigue set in.

Standout Players

Sorrento’s attacking midfielder was the standout performer, involved in all three goals with incisive passing and intelligent movement. Their striker’s pace caused problems all evening. For Cavese, the winger who scored the second equaliser was a constant threat, and their captain led by example with a tireless display, but the defensive unit will be disappointed with the goals conceded.

Table Impact and What’s Next

The win lifts Sorrento into a more comfortable position in the Serie C standings and boosts confidence ahead of a demanding run of fixtures. Cavese remain in a battle to climb away from the lower reaches of the table. They will need to tighten up defensively while maintaining their attacking threat. Both teams now prepare for their next league matches, with Sorrento hoping this result sparks a run and Cavese desperate to stop the leak of goals.
