SudTirol and Ascoli Play Out Goalless Draw in Serie B

SudTirol and Ascoli shared the points in a hard-fought 0-0 draw at the Stadio Druso on Saturday evening, a result that leaves both teams still searching for a consistent run of form in Serie B.

In a match that promised much but delivered little in front of goal, the home side dominated possession but found Ascoli's defensive wall difficult to breach. The visitors, set up to frustrate, sat deep and looked to hit on the counter. Chances were at a premium, but both goalkeepers were called into action at key moments.

Key Moments

• 14' – SudTirol's first real opening falls to striker Manuel Fischnaller, but his low effort is smothered by the Ascoli goalkeeper.
• 33' – Ascoli nearly take the lead against the run of play when a quick counter ends with a shot that clips the outside of the post.
• 58' – SudTirol have the ball in the net from a corner, but the referee rules it out for a foul on the goalkeeper.
• 79' – A goal-bound header from SudTirol's centre-back is cleared off the line by an Ascoli defender.
• 90+3' – Ascoli's best chance of the half falls to their substitute, but his shot is straight at the SudTirol keeper.

Tactical Story

SudTirol lined up in a 4-4-2, with the intention of using their wide players to stretch Ascoli's back line. However, Ascoli's 5-3-2 formation, with three central defenders and wing-backs dropping deep, created a compact block that was hard to penetrate. The visitors were happy to concede possession and looked to launch rapid counter-attacks through their pacey forwards. SudTirol's manager switched to a 4-2-3-1 in the second half, pushing more men forward, but the lack of a cutting edge in the final third proved costly. Ascoli will be the happier of the two sides, having executed their game plan almost perfectly.

Standout Players

Andrea Cagnano (SudTirol) – The defender was a rock at the back, winning numerous aerial duels and also going close with a header at the other end.

Nicola Leali (Ascoli) – The goalkeeper made two crucial saves, including a late stop to preserve the clean sheet.

Fabio Maistro (SudTirol) – The midfielder was the creative hub, constantly looking for openings, though he was often crowded out.

Season Impact

The draw leaves SudTirol in 10th place with 10 points from 8 matches, while Ascoli sit 14th with 8 points. Both teams remain within touching distance of the play-off places, but the lack of goals will be a concern for SudTirol in particular. Ascoli, on the other hand, will take confidence from a solid defensive performance on the road. Next up, SudTirol face a trip to Brescia, while Ascoli welcome Cittadella to the Stadio Cino e Lillo Del Duca.
