Modena produced one of their most commanding performances of the Italian Serie B season on Saturday night, defeating Cesena 3-0 at the Stadio Alberto Braglia. A brace from striker Matteo Ferri and a first-half header from captain Luca Bianchi gave the home side a deserved victory, while a disciplined defensive display secured a clean sheet that could prove valuable in the race for the promotion playoffs.

Match overview

From the opening whistle, Modena set the tone with an aggressive high press and quick vertical passing. Cesena struggled to build from the back, repeatedly losing possession in their own half as the home side crowded the midfield. Modena’s 4-3-3 shape allowed the wide forwards to pin Cesena’s wing-backs deep, creating space for central midfielders to arrive in the box. The visitors briefly stabilized after the opening goal but never found a sustained rhythm in possession.

Key moments

• 13th minute: Modena took the lead when Ferri latched onto a loose ball just inside the penalty area and guided a low finish into the bottom corner.
• 44th minute: Bianchi doubled the advantage with a powerful header from a corner, rising above his marker at the near post.
• 55th minute: Cesena’s best chance of the night arrived through a counter-attack, but Modena goalkeeper Andrea Costa produced a strong save to preserve the two-goal cushion.
• 68th minute: Ferri completed his brace after a flowing move down the right, converting from close range after a cut-back.
• 84th minute: Modena managed the closing stages calmly, keeping Cesena at arm’s length and limiting the visitors to speculative efforts from distance.

Tactical story

The match was defined by Modena’s control of the middle third. Their midfield trio pressed in coordinated bursts, forcing Cesena into rushed passes and preventing the visitors from finding their front two. When Cesena did manage to bypass the first line of pressure, Modena’s back four stepped up smartly to compress the space behind midfield. Going forward, Modena repeatedly targeted the channels between Cesena’s center-backs and wing-backs, and that approach produced the opening goal and several other promising moments.

Standout players

Ferri was the obvious headline performer, with his movement and finishing giving Cesena problems throughout. Bianchi’s leadership and set-piece threat added another dimension, while Costa’s second-half save kept the momentum firmly with the home side. For Cesena, the evening was one to forget, though their goalkeeper made several stops to prevent the scoreline from becoming more emphatic.

Season impact

The three points lift Modena into the promotion playoff places and extend their strong home form. A clean sheet against a direct rival will also boost confidence as the Serie B schedule grows more demanding. Cesena, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly; the defeat leaves them with work to do in the standings and raises questions about their ability to handle sustained pressure away from home. The head-to-head now favors Modena, and the result adds another important chapter to what is becoming an intriguing Serie B campaign.
