Hellas Verona 2-1 Vicenza: Late Winner Settles Serie B Contest

Hellas Verona claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Vicenza in Italian Serie B on Sunday 20 September 2026, with a late goal at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi deciding a tense, tactical contest. The win strengthens Verona’s position in the early promotion race, while Vicenza were left to rue a spirited second-half comeback that ultimately brought no reward.

Played under the lights in Verona, the match carried the feel of a derby despite the two clubs’ recent histories. Verona began with purpose, pressing high and forcing Vicenza into a series of hurried clearances, while the visitors looked to spring quick counter-attacks through the channels. The home crowd urged Verona forward, and the breakthrough arrived midway through the first half.

Match overview

Verona set up in a flexible 3-4-2-1 shape, using their wing-backs to stretch Vicenza’s back four. Vicenza responded with a compact 4-3-3, sitting deep without the ball and trying to release their wide forwards on the break. The pattern was established early: Verona had the majority of possession, but Vicenza remained dangerous whenever they won the ball in midfield.

After taking the lead, Verona controlled the tempo for much of the first half. Vicenza’s goalkeeper made two important saves to keep the deficit at one, and that resilience paid off after the interval when the visitors equalised from the penalty spot. For a period, Vicenza looked the more likely side to score next, but Verona’s bench and set-piece quality eventually told.

Key moments

• 18th minute – Verona take the lead: A patient move down the right ended with a low cross into the penalty area, and Verona’s centre-forward turned the ball in from close range after a clever near-post run.
• 54th minute – Vicenza equalise: The visitors won a penalty after a driving run into the box was halted by a mistimed challenge. Vicenza’s captain sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from twelve yards to make it 1-1.
• 78th minute – Verona score the winner: A deep corner was headed back across goal, and Verona’s central defender powered a header into the bottom corner to restore the home side’s advantage.
• 90+4 minutes – Late drama: Vicenza pushed bodies forward and nearly snatched a dramatic equaliser, but a goal-line clearance and a comfortable save preserved Verona’s win.

Tactical story

Verona’s victory was built on patience and width. Their wing-backs repeatedly pinned Vicenza’s full-backs deep, allowing the midfielders to dominate the second balls. The home side finished with more possession and more shots on target, but Vicenza’s compact defensive block made the game far from straightforward. The visitors’ penalty gave them belief, and for twenty minutes they matched Verona chance for chance.

The decisive tactical shift came when Verona introduced fresh legs in wide areas. That allowed them to keep delivering crosses and corners, and it was from a set piece that the winning goal arrived. Vicenza, who had defended bravely for long spells, could not clear the second ball and were punished.

Standout players

Verona’s attacking midfielder was the creative spark, drifting between the lines and linking midfield with attack. The centre-forward took his goal well and occupied both centre-backs throughout. At the back, Verona’s captain produced a commanding performance, winning important headers and stepping into midfield to break up Vicenza’s counters. For Vicenza, the goalkeeper kept them in the contest with a string of saves, while the captain’s penalty was the highlight of a committed display.

Serie B table impact

The three points lift Hellas Verona into the early playoff conversation and continue their strong start to the Serie B campaign. For Vicenza, the defeat leaves them searching for consistency, though the performance showed enough fight to suggest they can climb away from the lower reaches of the table. The head-to-head record now swings back in Verona’s favour, and the return fixture in Vicenza will carry added significance later in the season.
