Vicenza secure impressive 2-0 away win at Empoli in Serie B

Full-time: Empoli 0-2 Vicenza

Vicenza produced a disciplined and clinical away performance to beat Empoli 2-0 in the Italian Serie B, using a strong first-half platform and a late second goal to claim all three points at the Stadio Carlo Castellani – Computer Gross Arena. Empoli enjoyed long spells of possession, but Vicenza’s defensive organisation and sharp counter-attacking proved decisive.

Match overview

Empoli began the match with the intent of controlling the ball and pinning Vicenza back. The home side circulated possession patiently, looking to draw the visitors out of their mid-block, but clear chances were hard to come by. Vicenza stayed compact, protected the central corridor, and waited for opportunities to break at speed.

The breakthrough came just after the half-hour mark. Vicenza won the ball in midfield and moved it forward quickly, creating a shooting angle at the edge of the box. The finish was low and precise, leaving the Empoli goalkeeper with little chance. Empoli responded before half-time with a header from a corner, but Vicenza’s goalkeeper made a strong save to preserve the lead.

Key moments

• 31st minute: Vicenza take the lead with a quick transition and a composed finish from the edge of the penalty area.
• 44th minute: Empoli’s best first-half chance is denied by a fine save from the Vicenza goalkeeper.
• 58th minute: Empoli push more bodies forward, but Vicenza’s back line blocks a goalbound effort.
• 76th minute: Vicenza double the lead on the counter, finishing calmly after a sweeping move.
• 88th minute: Empoli force another save, but the visitors see out the closing minutes comfortably.

Tactical story

The game was a classic contrast in styles. Empoli wanted to build patiently and dominate territory, while Vicenza were content to defend in a compact block and strike in transition. Empoli’s full-backs pushed high, which created space behind them, and Vicenza repeatedly looked to exploit that space with direct passes into the channels.

As the match wore on, Empoli’s pressing became less coordinated and Vicenza grew more confident. The second goal was the perfect example of their game plan: a turnover, a quick vertical pass, and a finish taken without hesitation. Empoli’s possession numbers may have looked healthy, but Vicenza had the clearer ideas in the decisive moments.

Standout performers

Vicenza’s centre-forward was the focal point of the attack, holding the ball up and finishing the opening goal with real quality. The goalkeeper also played a crucial role, making important saves at 1-0 and late on. For Empoli, the creative midfielder tried to force the issue and produced several dangerous deliveries, but the home side lacked the final connection in the box.

Season impact

This is a significant away result for Vicenza, who will take confidence from beating a promotion-minded opponent on the road. The three points strengthen their position in the Serie B standings and underline their ability to win without dominating possession. Empoli, meanwhile, are left to reflect on a frustrating night in front of their own supporters. The result adds pressure to their next fixture and highlights the need for greater cutting edge in the final third.
