Benevento claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Carrarese in Italian Serie B on Saturday, extending their reputation as one of the most difficult teams to break down in the division and leaving the Tuscan hosts with nothing but regrets about a night of missed opportunities.

Played at the Stadio dei Marmi, with its famous marble statues overlooking the pitch and the Apuan Alps in the background, the contest was a classic Serie B encounter: tight, tactically cautious, and decided by a single moment of quality rather than a prolonged spell of dominance.

Match overview

Carrarese began well and had the better of the opening half-hour, moving the ball patiently through midfield and looking to use the width of the pitch. Benevento, as they so often do, sat in a well-organised shape, conceded possession in harmless areas, and waited for their moment.

That moment came when a rapid transition caught the home side exposed, and a cool finish put the visitors 1-0 up. From then on, the game became an exercise in game management. Benevento dropped deeper, compressed the space between the lines, and asked Carrarese to find a way through a defence that simply refused to be broken.

Key moments

• Early pressure: Carrarese dominate the ball and create two half-chances in the opening period.
• The decisive goal: Benevento score on the counter-attack with a composed finish to take a 1-0 lead.
• Before half-time: Carrarese push for an immediate response but are met by a compact, disciplined defensive block.
• Second-half substitutions: The hosts introduce fresh attacking legs and move to a more direct approach.
• Late siege: Carrarese pile forward in the closing stages, winning corners and free kicks, but the equaliser never arrives.

Tactical story

Carrarese's approach was built on possession and patient build-up, but they struggled all evening to penetrate the final third. Benevento's back line dropped at the right moments and their midfield screened the space in front of the defence with discipline, forcing the hosts into crosses that were comfortably dealt with.

The visitors' game plan was a masterclass in efficiency. They committed few players forward, kept their shape when they lost the ball, and defended set pieces with total concentration. In a league where away wins are notoriously difficult to come by, that kind of structure is worth its weight in points.

Standout performers

Benevento's goalkeeper was the quiet hero of the night, dealing comfortably with crosses and making one important save late on to preserve the clean sheet. In front of him, the two centre-backs were outstanding, winning headers and stepping out to intercept passes with real authority.

Carrarese's most impressive performer was their deep-lying midfielder, who kept the team ticking and never stopped asking for the ball even as space closed around him. The club's supporters, who have embraced Serie B football at the Stadio dei Marmi after so many years away, gave their team a generous ovation despite the defeat.

What the result means

The three points are valuable for Benevento, who continue to build a promotion case on the foundations of defensive solidity and clinical finishing. Winning away at a newly promoted but well-drilled side like Carrarese is exactly the type of result that separates genuine contenders from the chasing pack.

For Carrarese, the lesson is straightforward: possession without penetration does not win football matches. Their season will be judged on how quickly they convert territory into goals, particularly at home, where the Stadio dei Marmi should be an advantage rather than a source of frustration. In the tightly packed Serie B standings, narrow home defeats are the sort of results that teams look back on in May and wish they had reversed.
