Benevento and Vicenza played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in Italian Serie B on 17 October 2026, with the two sides trading blows across a frantic second half at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito. The hosts twice held the lead, but Vicenza's persistence and willingness to attack in numbers earned them a share of the points in a match that rarely slowed down.

Match overview

Benevento began with purpose, pressing Vicenza's build-up and forcing turnovers in dangerous areas. The breakthrough came midway through the first half when a quick combination down the right ended with a low finish into the far corner. The lead lasted until just before the interval, when Vicenza responded with a well-worked equaliser — a clever reverse pass splitting the defence and a composed finish from the edge of the six-yard box.

The second half was stretched and open. Benevento regained the advantage from the penalty spot after a foul inside the area, only for Vicenza to level again with a header from a deep free kick. Both goalkeepers were called into action in the final 20 minutes, and both sides had chances to win it in stoppage time as the game opened up completely.

Key moments

• 23' — Benevento take the lead with a sweeping move finished low at the back post.
• 44' — Vicenza equalise with a perfectly weighted through ball and a calm finish.
• 61' — Benevento are awarded a penalty and convert emphatically to make it 2-1.
• 74' — Vicenza level again, heading home from a set piece at the far post.
• 88' — A superb double save from the Benevento goalkeeper preserves the point.
• 90+4' — Vicenza break clear in stoppage time but the final shot is dragged wide.

Tactical story

Benevento's plan was built on aggressive pressing and quick vertical passes, and for long stretches it worked. Their midfield won the majority of second balls in the first hour, allowing them to sustain attacks and pin Vicenza back. The penalty came directly from that pressure, with a defender caught out by a late run into the box.

Vicenza's response was smart rather than spectacular. They adjusted their shape after the hour, pushing their wing-backs higher and adopting a more direct route to the striker. That change produced the equalising goal and turned a game that had been slipping away into a genuine contest. In the final 15 minutes, Vicenza looked the more likely winners, but Benevento's back line and goalkeeper held firm under pressure.

Standout players

Benevento's attacking midfielder was the best player on the pitch for the first hour, linking play and drawing fouls in dangerous areas. His side's goalkeeper produced the moment of the match late on with a reflex stop to deny a close-range volley. For Vicenza, the central defender was outstanding in the air and also scored the equaliser, while their substitute winger changed the tempo of the game after coming on.

Season impact

The draw keeps both clubs in the crowded middle of the Serie B standings, where a couple of results can move a team several places in an afternoon. Benevento will feel they dropped two points after leading twice, while Vicenza will take encouragement from another resilient away performance. With the promotion race already taking shape, neither side can afford many more draws of this kind — but for the neutral, this was Serie B at its most watchable.
