Catanzaro U19 claimed a 2-1 away victory over Avellino U19 in Campionato Primavera 2 on Saturday, 17 October 2026, using a disciplined defensive display and a late winner to take all three points.

Avellino U19 had spells of possession and found an equaliser in the second half, but Catanzaro U19 stayed compact, defended their box well and struck at the decisive moment. The result strengthens Catanzaro’s position in the standings and leaves Avellino with a narrow home defeat to reflect on.

Match overview

Catanzaro made the brighter start and were rewarded in the 12th minute when Francesco Curcio found space between the centre-backs and finished with composure. The early goal gave the visitors something to protect, and they dropped into a well-drilled mid-block that made it difficult for Avellino to play through the middle.

Avellino improved as the first half wore on. Their wide players began to isolate their markers, and the home side created two good chances before the interval. The equaliser eventually arrived in the 63rd minute through Antonio Russo, who turned inside the box and placed a shot beyond the goalkeeper.

At 1-1, the game opened up. Avellino pushed for a second, but that left space for Catanzaro on the counter-attack. The winning goal came in the 82nd minute when Matteo Leone arrived at the back post to convert a low cross. Avellino pressed late, but Catanzaro managed the closing minutes well and held on for an important away win.

Key moments

• 12’ – Catanzaro lead: Francesco Curcio punished a gap in the Avellino defence with a composed finish.
• 63’ – Avellino equalise: Antonio Russo created half a yard of space and found the far corner.
• 82’ – Catanzaro winner: Matteo Leone converted at the back post after a quick break down the right.
• 90’ – Late pressure: Avellino sent bodies forward, but Catanzaro’s back line cleared every dangerous ball.

Tactical story

Catanzaro’s plan was built on defensive discipline rather than constant possession. Their midfield stayed close to the back four, limiting Avellino’s ability to find pockets between the lines. When they won the ball, they looked to attack quickly through the channels, and that approach produced the opening goal.

Avellino’s best moments came when they increased the tempo and got their full-backs involved. The equaliser was a reward for that spell of pressure, but the home side’s willingness to commit numbers forward left them exposed late on. Catanzaro’s ability to transition from defence to attack in a matter of seconds proved to be the difference.

Standout players

Curcio’s early goal set the tone for Catanzaro, while Leone’s late winner highlighted his knack for arriving in dangerous areas. In midfield, Catanzaro’s captain kept the shape together during Avellino’s best spell. For Avellino, Russo was the most threatening player and took his goal well, but the home side lacked the same cutting edge in the final 10 minutes.

Season impact

The win gives Catanzaro U19 momentum and valuable points on the road in Campionato Primavera 2. Away victories of this kind can shape a youth season, especially when they include a late decisive moment. Avellino U19 will take encouragement from their second-half response, but the result is a reminder that concentration must hold for the full 90 minutes.
