Kiryat Gat came from behind to beat Maccabi Kabilio Jaffa 2-1 in the Israel Leumit League on Friday night, turning a difficult first half into an important home victory at the Kiryat Gat Municipal Stadium.

Maccabi Kabilio Jaffa struck first and looked comfortable for long spells, but Kiryat Gat responded with a determined second-half comeback. The equaliser arrived before the break, and a well-taken winner in the second half completed the turnaround, sending the home supporters home happy.

Match overview

The visitors started brightly and took the lead with a move that exposed space down Kiryat Gat’s left side. For the next 20 minutes, Jaffa were the sharper team, pressing high and forcing errors in the home side’s build-up. But Kiryat Gat gradually grew into the contest, finding joy through their midfield runners and set-piece deliveries.

The equaliser changed the mood inside the stadium. Kiryat Gat began the second half with more urgency, pushed their full-backs higher, and created a string of chances before finally finding the winning goal.

Key moments

• 23rd minute: Maccabi Kabilio Jaffa took the lead with a low finish after a quick passing move opened up the Kiryat Gat defence.
• 41st minute: Kiryat Gat equalised when a corner was only half-cleared and the ball was driven back in for a close-range finish.
• 58th minute: The home side went close again, forcing a fine save from the Jaffa goalkeeper after a shot from the edge of the box.
• 74th minute: Kiryat Gat scored the winner, with their striker holding off a defender and finishing across goal.
• 89th minute: Jaffa pushed forward in search of a leveller, but Kiryat Gat’s back line held firm under late pressure.

Tactical story

The game was decided by Kiryat Gat’s second-half adjustments. They moved the ball more quickly through midfield, stopped allowing Jaffa’s pressing forwards to settle, and used the width of the pitch to stretch the visitors’ back four. Jaffa, by contrast, dropped deeper after taking the lead and struggled to regain their early rhythm.

Set pieces were also a major factor. Kiryat Gat’s equaliser came from a corner, and their willingness to put deliveries into the box kept Jaffa’s defence under constant stress. The winning goal, however, came from open play and was a reward for the home side’s improved intensity after the interval.

Standout players

Kiryat Gat’s striker was the obvious match-winner, scoring the decisive goal and occupying the Jaffa centre-backs throughout the second half. Their central midfielder also deserves mention for controlling the tempo after half-time. For Maccabi Kabilio Jaffa, the goalkeeper made several important saves, while their attacking midfielder was dangerous in the first half but faded as the game wore on.

Table and season impact

The win gives Kiryat Gat three important points in the Israel Leumit League standings and strengthens their home record. For Maccabi Kabilio Jaffa, the defeat is a frustrating one after a promising start, and they will need to respond quickly in their next fixture. With the Leumit League table remaining competitive, both sides know that small margins and second-half performances like this one can shape the season.
