Ironi Modiin's unbeaten home run came to an abrupt end on Friday night as Hapoel Afula claimed a battling 2-1 victory in the Israel Leumit League. Trailing to an early strike, the visitors responded with two goals in a dominant second-half spell to take all three points back to the north and hand Modiin a frustrating evening in front of their own supporters.

Match Overview

The game began exactly as the home crowd hoped. Modiin started brightly, pressing Afula's back line and getting rewards inside the opening quarter of an hour when a well-worked move down the right ended with a cool finish into the bottom corner and a 1-0 lead.

But the goal seemed to jolt Afula into life rather than rattle them. The visitors gradually took control of midfield, winning the ball higher up the pitch and forcing Modiin into a string of defensive errors. The equaliser arrived before the break, and from that moment the momentum belonged almost entirely to the away side.

Key Moments

• 14th minute: Ironi Modiin open the scoring with a crisp low finish after a slick passing sequence on the right flank.
• 39th minute: Hapoel Afula level the scores, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and converting from close range.
• 55th minute: Afula's goalkeeper makes a crucial stop one-on-one to deny Modiin a second goal against the run of play.
• 72nd minute: The visitors take the lead, finishing off a swift counter-attack with a composed strike from the edge of the area.
• 88th minute: Modiin throw everyone forward, but a brave block and a clearance off the line protect Afula's advantage.

Tactical Story

Afula's comeback was built on a simple but effective adjustment: pushing their wide players higher and squeezing the space in which Modiin's midfielders could operate. That change forced the home side into long, hopeful balls forward in the second half, which Afula's centre-backs dealt with comfortably.

Modiin's manager made attacking substitutions in search of an equaliser, and the switch to a more direct shape did create two half-chances late on. However, the hosts' final ball lacked the precision of their early play, and Afula's defensive discipline held firm through five minutes of stoppage time.

Standout Performers

Afula's attacking midfielder was the heartbeat of the comeback, linking play between the lines and creating the decisive second goal with a perfectly weighted pass. Their goalkeeper's 55th-minute save proved just as important. For Modiin, the opening goalscorer was lively throughout, but too few of his teammates matched that intensity after the interval.

Season Impact

The win lifts Hapoel Afula into a healthier position in the Leumit League table and underlines their reputation as one of the division's most dangerous away teams. For Ironi Modiin, it is a reminder that leads in this league must be protected — dropping points at home against a direct rival can prove costly when the promotion and relegation battles are settled in the spring.

What's Next

Afula will look to carry this second-half performance into their next fixture, while Modiin must quickly regroup and rediscover the defensive solidity that made them so difficult to beat earlier in the campaign.
