Foolad Khozestan produced a disciplined and clinical away performance on Sunday evening, defeating Persepolis 1-0 in the Iran Pro League. A second-half goal settled a tense contest at the Azadi Stadium and handed the home side a costly setback in the early-season title race.

Match overview

Persepolis controlled the ball for long spells and pushed numbers forward in search of an opener, but Foolad Khozestan defended with concentration and discipline. The visitors sat deep, protected the central areas, and looked to strike on the counter or from set pieces. That approach paid off when the breakthrough arrived in the second half, and Persepolis were unable to find a response despite late pressure.

Key moments

• Early pressure: Persepolis dominated possession in the opening 20 minutes, forcing Foolad into a deep defensive block, but the visitors' goalkeeper dealt comfortably with crosses and long-range efforts.
• The breakthrough: Foolad scored the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute after a quick transition. A well-weighted pass released the attacker, who finished calmly past the Persepolis goalkeeper.
• Late push: Persepolis threw bodies forward in the final 15 minutes and won several corners, but Foolad's defenders blocked shots and cleared danger with composure.

Tactical story

The match followed a familiar pattern: Persepolis had the ball, while Foolad Khozestan had the better structure without it. The home side's full-backs pushed high, but their movement in the final third was too predictable, and crosses into the box were repeatedly cleared. Foolad's midfield stayed compact and forced Persepolis to play around them rather than through them. When the visitors won possession, they attacked directly and with purpose, and that efficiency proved decisive.

Standout performers

Foolad's goalkeeper was calm under pressure and made two important second-half saves. The goalscorer will take the headlines, but the central defenders deserved just as much credit for keeping Persepolis's forwards quiet. For Persepolis, the midfield worked hard to recycle possession, but the team lacked a sharp final pass in and around the penalty area.

What it means for the table

The result gives Foolad Khozestan a valuable three points on the road and strengthens their reputation as a difficult team to break down. For Persepolis, the defeat is a reminder that dominance in possession means little without penetration. In a league where home form is often decisive, dropping points at the Azadi Stadium could prove significant as the Iran Pro League standings begin to take shape.
