Inchicore Athletic FC produced a ruthless away performance to defeat Finglas United 3-1 in the Leinster Senior League on Sunday evening, with a clinical second-half display sealing a deserved three points.

The win lifts Inchicore into a promising position in the standings, while Finglas are left to reflect on a night where defensive lapses proved costly.

Match Overview

The visitors started brightly and needed just eight minutes to break the deadlock. Craig Murphy timed his run perfectly to meet a low cross and dispatched a first-time finish past the Finglas goalkeeper. Finglas responded well, pressing higher and forcing Inchicore into a series of hurried passes. Their persistence paid off in the 30th minute when Paul Whelan capitalised on a loose ball in the box and fired home the equaliser.

Level at the break, the game was finely balanced. But Inchicore stepped up a gear after the interval. Murphy struck again in the 55th minute, finishing off a sweeping team move that cut through Finglas’s midfield. Dean Kelly then put the result beyond doubt in the 72nd minute, latching onto a through ball and coolly rounding the goalkeeper before rolling the ball into an empty net.

Finglas pushed forward in the final 15 minutes, but Inchicore’s back line remained organised and disciplined, limiting the hosts to half-chances. The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 3-1 victory for the away side.

Key Moments

• 8’ – Inchicore goal: Craig Murphy opens the scoring with a crisp first-time finish.
• 30’ – Finglas goal: Paul Whelan pounces on a defensive mix-up to equalise.
• 55’ – Inchicore goal: Murphy grabs his second after a slick passing move.
• 72’ – Inchicore goal: Dean Kelly rounds the keeper to make it 3-1.

Tactical Story

Inchicore Athletic lined up in a flexible 4-3-3, with their front three interchanging positions to pull Finglas’s defence out of shape. The midfield trio of Adam Kearns, Ryan Doyle, and Ben Carter dominated the central areas, winning possession and quickly turning defence into attack. Finglas United, by contrast, struggled to maintain possession under pressure. Their attempts to play out from the back were frequently intercepted, and their wide players were often isolated. A switch to a back three in the second half offered more attacking width, but it also left gaps that Inchicore exploited ruthlessly on the counter.

Standout Players

Craig Murphy was the undisputed man of the match, his two goals showcasing both his movement and finishing ability. Dean Kelly’s composure for the third goal was equally impressive, while midfielder Adam Kearns dictated the tempo with a composed display. For Finglas, Paul Whelan took his goal well and worked tirelessly, but the defensive unit will need to review the second and third goals, both of which came from avoidable errors.

Season Impact

This result gives Inchicore Athletic a significant boost in the Leinster Senior League, moving them closer to the upper reaches of the table. Finglas United, meanwhile, remain in search of consistency and will need to address their defensive vulnerabilities quickly. The three points also improve Inchicore’s away record, a factor that could prove crucial in the race for promotion or a top-half finish.
