Waterford United pulled off an impressive 2-0 away win against Bohemians in the Ireland FAI Cup on Saturday, 10 October 2026, knocking the Premier Division side out of the competition. Two second-half goals sealed a memorable victory for the visitors, who executed a perfect game plan at Dalymount Park.

Match Overview

Bohemians, the home favourites, dominated the opening exchanges but found themselves frustrated by a well-organised Waterford United defence. The visitors sat deep, allowing Bohemians possession but limiting them to shots from distance. As the game wore on, Waterford grew in confidence and began to threaten on the counter-attack. The deadlock was broken just after the hour mark, and Bohemians’ response was ineffective, allowing Waterford to add a second and seal a famous cup upset.

Key Moments

• 62nd minute: Waterford United take the lead. A quick break down the left ends with a low cross that is tapped in at the back post.
• 71st minute: Bohemians’ best chance. A header from a corner is cleared off the line by a Waterford defender.
• 84th minute: Waterford double the lead. A free-kick from 25 yards is curled beautifully into the top corner.
• 90+2 minute: Bohemians push forward desperately, but Waterford’s goalkeeper makes a comfortable save to confirm the win.

Tactical Story

Waterford United’s manager set his team up in a compact 5-3-2 formation, with the wing-backs dropping deep to form a back five when Bohemians had the ball. The plan was to absorb pressure and hit on the break, and it worked to perfection. Bohemians, who usually rely on quick passing and movement, were forced to play in front of Waterford’s defence and struggled to find a way through. The visitors’ two goals came from classic counter-attacking moves, and their defensive discipline in the closing stages was outstanding.

Standout Players

Waterford United’s goalkeeper was the hero, making several important saves and commanding his area with authority. The two goalscorers will take the headlines, but the midfield trio worked tirelessly to break up Bohemians’ attacks and launch counters. For Bohemians, it was a night to forget; their star forward was well marshalled, and their midfield lacked creativity. The manager will be disappointed with the lack of urgency in the final third.

Cup Run and Season Impact

This victory sends Waterford United into the next round of the Ireland FAI Cup and gives them a major confidence boost. For Bohemians, the defeat ends their cup dreams for another year and raises questions about their ability to break down defensive teams. Waterford will now believe they can go on a deep cup run, and on this evidence, they have the organisation and spirit to trouble any side left in the competition.
