Newroz SC secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zakho SC in the Iraq Stars League on Friday, 9 October 2026, with a second-half goal proving enough to separate the two sides in a tense, tactical contest. The win gives Newroz a valuable three points on the road and leaves Zakho reflecting on a night of near-misses and frustration.

Match Overview

Played under the lights at the Zakho International Stadium, the match was billed as a clash between two teams eager to climb the Iraq Stars League table. Zakho SC started brightly, pressing high and forcing Newroz into a series of early clearances. However, the visitors weathered the storm and gradually grew into the game, using quick transitions to stretch the home defence.

The decisive moment arrived in the 67th minute when Karwan Ali latched onto a clever through ball and slotted a composed finish past the Zakho goalkeeper. It was a goal that rewarded Newroz for their patience and clinical counter-attacking approach. Despite late pressure from Zakho, the visitors held firm to claim all three points.

Key Moments

• 12th minute: Zakho SC's first real chance — a header from a corner flashes just wide of the Newroz post.
• 34th minute: Newroz goalkeeper Hemin Ibrahim makes a superb one-handed save to deny Zakho's striker from close range.
• 67th minute: Karwan Ali scores the only goal of the game, finishing calmly after a swift Newroz counter-attack.
• 82nd minute: Zakho appeals for a penalty are waved away after a challenge inside the box.
• 90+4th minute: A last-ditch clearance from Newroz defender Rebaz Aziz preserves the clean sheet.

Tactical Story

Zakho SC lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, looking to dominate possession and create chances through the middle. Their midfield duo worked tirelessly, but Newroz's compact 4-4-2 defensive block proved difficult to break down. The visitors sat deep, absorbed pressure, and then exploded forward with pace whenever they won the ball back.

Newroz's game plan was clear: stay disciplined, frustrate Zakho, and take advantage of set pieces or counter-attacks. It worked to perfection. Their defence, marshalled by captain Mohammed Saleh, kept a disciplined line and dealt with Zakho's crosses effectively. In the end, the difference was Newroz's ruthlessness in front of goal — a quality Zakho lacked on the night.

Standout Players

Karwan Ali (Newroz SC): The match-winner was a constant threat on the break, and his well-taken goal proved decisive. His movement off the ball caused Zakho's centre-backs problems all evening.

Hemin Ibrahim (Newroz SC): The goalkeeper produced a string of important saves, none more crucial than his first-half stop that kept the scores level. A clean sheet away from home is a testament to his concentration.

Ali Faez (Zakho SC): Despite the defeat, Zakho's midfielder was a driving force, completing more passes than any other player and testing the Newroz defence with clever runs.

What the Result Means for the Table

The victory lifts Newroz SC into a more comfortable position in the Iraq Stars League standings, giving them momentum as they push for a top-half finish. For Zakho SC, it is a missed opportunity to climb the table, especially after a promising start. The home side will need to improve their finishing if they are to turn possession into points in the coming weeks.

Newroz will look to build on this result in their next fixture, while Zakho must regroup quickly. In a league where every point matters, this narrow defeat could prove costly if Zakho's attacking woes continue.
