Ghaz Al Shamal 1-0 Al Zawraa: Late Goal Stuns Al Zawraa in Iraq Stars League

Ghaz Al Shamal produced a disciplined and resilient performance to beat Al Zawraa SC 1-0 in the Iraq Stars League on 18 October 2026, with a late goal sealing a memorable victory. Al Zawraa dominated possession for long periods but were undone by a single moment of quality on the counterattack, leaving the capital club to reflect on two dropped points.

The result is a significant one for Ghaz Al Shamal, who showed that organization and belief can overcome a more fancied opponent. For Al Zawraa, it was a frustrating night in the Iraq Stars League: they had control of the ball but lacked the penetration needed to break down a well-drilled defensive unit.

Match overview

Al Zawraa started as expected, controlling possession and pushing Ghaz Al Shamal back into their own half. The visitors moved the ball neatly through midfield and looked to create openings through their wide players, but the final ball was often missing. Ghaz Al Shamal defended with discipline, keeping their shape and forcing Al Zawraa into sideways passes.

The first half’s best chance fell to Al Zawraa in the 14th minute, but a close-range effort was blocked by a brave defensive challenge. Ghaz Al Shamal responded with a rare counterattack that ended with a shot from distance, though it did not trouble the goalkeeper. The pattern was set: Al Zawraa with the ball, Ghaz Al Shamal looking to strike on the break.

Key moments

Al Zawraa continued to press after the interval and forced a series of corners and free kicks. Ghaz Al Shamal’s goalkeeper Ali Jassim produced a fine save in the 37th minute and another important stop early in the second half to keep the score level. The home side’s defenders threw themselves in front of shots, blocking several attempts from the edge of the area.

The decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute. Ghaz Al Shamal won the ball in midfield and launched a quick counterattack. Hassan Mohammed carried the ball into the penalty area, held off a defender and placed a low finish beyond the goalkeeper. The goal sent the home supporters into raptures and left Al Zawraa with little time to respond.

Al Zawraa pushed forward in the closing minutes and had one final chance from a header, but Ali Jassim saved comfortably. The final whistle confirmed a famous win for Ghaz Al Shamal and a disappointing result for one of the league’s traditional powers.

Tactical story

Ghaz Al Shamal’s game plan was clear: defend compactly, deny central access and attack quickly when turnovers occurred. Their midfield sat deep and screened the defence, while the forward players conserved energy for counterattacks. That strategy required patience and concentration, and the home side delivered both in abundance.

Al Zawraa, by contrast, struggled to turn possession into clear chances. Their buildup was often too slow, allowing Ghaz Al Shamal to reset their defensive block. When they did get into wide areas, their crosses were well defended. The lack of a decisive final pass proved costly, and the one moment they switched off at the back was enough to decide the match.

Standout players

Hassan Mohammed was the hero for Ghaz Al Shamal, taking his goal with composure and working hard defensively from the front. Goalkeeper Ali Jassim was equally important, making crucial saves and commanding his area under late pressure. The centre-back pairing also deserved credit for their resilience and aerial dominance.

For Al Zawraa, the midfielders worked hard to keep the team moving forward, but the attacking players lacked the sharpness needed to break down a deep defence. The goalkeeper had little to do until the goal, and the defenders were generally solid, but one lapse proved decisive.

Season impact

The three points are a major boost for Ghaz Al Shamal in the Iraq Stars League standings and will give the squad confidence for the matches ahead. Beating a club of Al Zawraa’s stature can be a turning point, especially when the performance is built on discipline and collective effort.

Al Zawraa will be frustrated by the result, as they had enough possession to win the game. Their challenge is to find more creative solutions against teams that defend deep. In a competitive league, dropping points in matches like this can have a significant impact on the title race.
